Health care workers are professionals that, like police, sometimes make fast life or death decisions under high pressure. Unlike police, they are not indemnified by tax payers. They obtain malpractice insurance on the private insurance market. A doctor who repeatedly makes mistakes requiring an insurance payout will have their policy canceled, become uninsurable, and either be out of business or put their personal assets at risk.

Why not have the police do the same thing? Bad cops could become uninsurable and forced out of their job. Why not put the responsibility where it belongs, on the cop, not the taxpayer?

Because doctors can hide behind laws that make it easy to obscure what happened. Patients are usually unconscious, no one is there with a camera cell phone to record mistakes, nor are mistakes even recognizable to a lay person. So it *is* affordable (for the most part) for doctors. Pull back the curtain and many, many doctors would be "cancelled". Their sins are just not on the open market for all to see.

Stop and think about how many people you know are perfect or even close to perfect. Not many. Could they afford insurance if ALL their mistakes were charged to an insurance plan? We're not talking about driving a car here. We're talking about split second life and death choices, or choices that could easily become so in the blink of an eye.

If you want to pay your police officers $400K a year I'm sure they would be happy to move to the system you suggest.

Until then, let's improve our record-keeping and hold the bad cops accountable and leave the good cops alone to do their job.
