A Farm Outside of Portland Becomes the Gathering Site for All Stripes of American Music at Pickathon

I've actually heard that "Pickathon" is hyped and overrated. Hot sun. Little shade. Lame music. Trying to be a "mini-Oregon Country Fair" and failing miserably. The people I know who've attended said they won't be coming back again.

@Topher Guess: Your sources are either wrong or lying. One thing Pickathon does have is plenty of shade. There are sails of tension fabric suspended over the main field, which creates plenty of shade, while everything else takes place either in the woods or inside the barns. As for the sun being too hot, that's really dependent on the weather and out of the hands of mere mortals. Last year was on the hot side; this year looks to be milder. Whether the music is lame or not--that's kind of up to your personal preference. If the lineup looks lame to you, then it's probably not your kind of music. And THANK GOD it's nothing like the Oregon Country Fair.

Topher, that's what you get for listening to other's opinions instead of checking it out yourself. Its a great time with good food and great music. You can just wander around listening to different bands. If you don't like something, walk into the woods and you'll be able to listen to a totally different band.

This sounds like an incredibly well run event in a beautiful location. I also don't doubt that the lineup is well curated. However, for this price I would only attend if a broader range of music was offered.

Sorry, guys. Nothing personal. And I actually was there, in 2004. Pickathon was no great shakes then, and I've heard it hasn't improved. Some of the bands are good; I know that's true, but I continue to hear things that keep me from returning.

Wish I could say something more positive about this event. But not based on what I've heard lately, or what I experienced, directly, in the past.

Please wait...
