"SOMEDAY VIDEOGAME MOVIES will have their Ghost World, their American Splendor—a breakout film that will bring a marginalized medium a degree of mainstream recognition. "
"But really, what'd you expect? It's based on a videogame, after all."
First you say the medium is marginalized, and then you proceed to marginalize it. Review the movie as a movie, but don't assume that the faults of the movie can be traced to the game. If you wanted to mention the game in a more useful fashion you could play it and then talk about how much better the writing and (voice) acting are! But that would take too much time and besides, your a film critic so you should be reviewing films, not games!
Anyways, I got around to watching "The Godfather" finally. Kind of pretentious, but what'd you expect? It's based on a book, after all.

That was supposed to be a joke. Apparently it is not recognizable as such, but... yep. Joking.
