Sauce should always be on the side and $11.49 for 8oz. of brisket is a bit steep, even for shit that was wood-smoked for 12 hours.
There's a "dive" Hawaiian BBQ joint in St Johns that has some exceptional food I make a habit of patronizing once in a while. Prices are reasonable and the two-person staff is refreshingly non-douchey. Every time I've been there I've heard awesome crust or sludge/doom metal spilling out of the kitchen. Not very Hawaiian but it always makes my day.
Oh yeah, and the food is awesome. The Huli Huli Chicken and tri-tip is crazy good, as is their Kalua pulled pork and brisket.
A friend and I were looking for a place in Sellwood and settled on Reverends. I ended up enjoying my meal despite a lot of the criticism around this place. While the ribs could be better, the Reverend burger and fried chicken were great. They definitely have areas where they can improve, but I'll definitely be going back.
