Jeff is one great guy! I have know the family for close to 30 years...These are good people and have helped many people back in the day with free credit, check cashing and always on hand to give help to anyone in need!
Jeff pays his taxes and helps the needy..Leave him alone!
I have to agree with the other poster: what was the point of this piece? Wow, a trans cabbie. Who cares? And the use of "faaabulous|? c'mon now.
Oh yeah... you gotta have "The Knowledge" to be a cabbie over there, right
Too bad you couldn't have brought a black cab over with you. They rock.
Welcome to the states. Hope you get yer monies saved up soon.
Two months? Two little months? I've been dispatched to calls older than two months. Let's see if you have the same attitude after a year with Radio. Or seven years driving cab in Portland. After you get spit on, puked on, cursed as a devil, and driven 12 hours for less than $30 for the night, then tell us how magical it all is. Until then you are a piker and a tourist.
Hope you come back and tell us all about it a year from now. Cheers
Erica's one of a kind. She's also one of the kindest people I know, not to say one of the most interesting. OK, I'm biased, she's a personal friend.
Some people make the world a better, saner, if more unusual, place, just by being themselves. She's one of Portland's residents that typifies the city, by being unique.
I visited Portland to take part in an International Conference on Genetic and Evolutionary Computation - quite a trip across the Pacific. I guess I fell in love a bit with the place, the US city with the European cultural diversity, and a personality all its own. Erica, The Fabulous, (and a darned skilful driver) is Portland personified.
it's only homophobic if you look them in the eyes.
@DamosA: Yep, I'm a well known homophobe. Why, just yesterday I was at the junior high bullying some little questioning boys.
@ Graham
Did you seriously count all the words in this article? Homophobic AND neurotic... YOU WIN!
love you Erica!!! thats our girl sherri2780
So... um.... There's a cabdriver? And this is news? I don't understand how this got to be an article. Was there seriously nothing better to write 300 words about?
It's actually pretty fair and balanced that OMSI would allow for the Chronicles of Narnia exhibition; Christians couldn't see anything on display at the Land of the Dinosaurs show.
My grandfather and uncle used to work in the building. For it having so many toxins they sure lived a long time. My Grandfather did suffer from asthma, but ultimately died from plain old age. Same with my Uncle. They were both in their 90s. My grandfather was in charge of mixing the gas and my uncle shoveled coal. It was a dirty job and my cousin remembers him coming home each night completely covered in coal dust. It's amazing he never got coal miners lung.
"It's sort of a secret, but OMSI is one of the few science museums nationwide that actually builds its own exhibits. It has one of the three largest exhibit-building studios in the US."
WHY THE FUCK DOESN'T OMSI BRAG ABOUT THIS?!?!? Give public tours and talks with the people making these exhibits? Man... they're really misisng out. Portland has a fairly robust homebrew DIY community and they'd love to chat with them.
This is such a beautiful article. Why I read the Portland Mercury and why I know I'll see Sarah Mirk's by-line over a good slice-of-life article. Bravo.
It'll be interesting to see how McMenamins' hippie artists handle the hotel's seedy history.

Thank you for publishing this article. Over the years, Alex has passionately shared valuable and important information regarding earth changes, alternative news, preparedness and wellness. It's about time Alex gets some recognition for his tireless efforts! More often than not it is a thankless job because the vast majority of the population is not aware of the subtle (and even overt) changes that are taking place and such individuals get very hostile when their myopic world views are challenged. To imply that Alex is a fear monger reveals more about the character of the accuser than Alex himself and will only serve to strengthen Alex's resolve in the long run. As Alex has mentioned time and time again, there will be challenges ahead for all of us but this is also a wonderful opportunity to create a better world. It's time to get out from under the oppressive and manipulative monetary, political and corporate systems and to take our humanity back. I'm ready to hit the reset button. Are you?
I'll leave you with a quote from a brilliant philosopher, mathematician and astronomer who was also condemned and eventually burned at the stake for his efforts to elevate mankind.
"It is proof of a base and low mind for one to wish to think with the masses or majority, merely because the majority is the majority. Truth does not change because it is, or is not, believed by a majority of the people." Giordano Bruno
Re: “In the Shadows”
I agree, I think Erica is absolutely wonderful! Gracious and kind with a delicious sense of humor. You are my hero : )
