You kept pointing out how you were a volunteer, working along side employees of this very much for profit company, doing a very for profit activity. While this was tacky enough you kept excusing how your coworker (another "volunteer") was getting phone calls from her teenage kids and you are very family first. You then went on to lecture a coworker about how they weren't customer service oriented as they insisted we follow the rules of our employer and not work more than five minutes after our scheduled shift. All the while, your coworker kept stepping away from the middle of assisting a paying customer to chat with her teenage children. It seems obvious you want a pat on the back for offering to step in at this busy event, but this is our job. I know it has probably been 30+ years since you worked for hourly wages, if ever, but try to put yourself in this new employees shoes. Please go volunteer where your services are actually needed.
