The new location of May Juliette Barruel's Nationale (home of delightful affordable luxuries like toiletries from France, locally produced art, books, mags, and vintage) is open today at in the 811 E Burnside building, Ste. 122 (in back). Along with the new location comes a new offer: store membership. For $6/mo, $30/6 mo, or $50/yr (or $350 for the "wOw/Marry Me" package, which I assume is good for life), members will be privy to exclusive events, which this month include a talk by this the March featured artist, Midori Hirose; a dance performance by Kathleen Keogh; and a concert by Davis Lee Hooker. Teasers for the six-month option include future events featuring Jon Raymond and Ilyas Ahmed. Members will also be entered in monthly drawings where they can "win back" their memberships in the form of products from Nationale as well as Stumptown Coffee, Laurelhurst Theater, and Tiga. Plus, for the month of March the store will watch your kid while you shop at neighboring businesses. Here's the official rundown:
the price tag came up because it seemed affordable enough in this day of age when we are all adjusting to having less cash on hands. 6 bucks get you the sunday times, a whiskey, a couple lattes, or about half hour of childcare. now it will also get you one month worth of NATIONALE goodness... besides all this, you will be showing us some serious love and support so we can continue doing what we're doing.
This is an unusual move for a store, which usually host events for free with the expectation that sales will make it worth it, but then again Nationale, from the beginning, has been more than just an ordinary store, and has always done much more than set out crackers and wine. Six bucks seems perfectly reasonable, especially if you plan on attending the events. . . right? Regardless, Nationale's jumping right in to join its neighbors in tomorrow's First Friday shenanigans, and anyone is free to pop into the new space for Hirose's new show, L Sub to the Polynomial's opening reception.
The cult-favorite OLO fragrances are one of the member-raffle prizes, normally retailing at $18-30.
