Earlier this week I was in Seattle, where I took a spin through the mother ship of Nordstrom stores (when in Rome...). Fresh in my mind was this year's Nordstrom Designer Preview Show at the Portland Art Museum a couple weeks back. While I am pretty adamant about keeping my focus on independent design, this event is always a real treat to cover. It's fancy: The drinks keep flowing, and it's chockablock with the kind of people I never seem to run into anywhere else: Leggy Kardashian-esque debutantes, balding braggarts wearing indoor shades, pre-pubescent girls wearing Lanvin and demanding Chanel bags from their daddies—all of them poring over the store's display of their most coveted lines, taking pre-orders before the main runway event. The runway presentation this year was the best I've seen at this event. The clothes have all long since made their official debuts at fashion weeks, but that doesn't dispel the sheer enjoyment of watching them come down the runway. Here are some highlights:
