For a city with as many stores specializing in gift items as Portland, it can sure be difficult when you actually need to find someone a gift. I can't count the number of hours I've spent scrambling at the last minute, looking for something fun, simple and unique to give someone and finding nothing but beautiful stuff I can't afford, cheap homogenized shit I'd be embarrassed to give, and clothes that may or may not be the right size. So when I went to check out Bridge City Mercantile, a recently opened space on 48th & Fremont, I was excited to find a new go-to store for fun, original gifts. The general mood of the store is bright and cheerful, and the merchandise spans from cute to pretty to funky.

The store has no shortage of locally made jewelry, with fun, crafty necklaces by Talia, chunky wood pieces by Frawn, and geometric, handcrafted earrings from store owner Rachel Robichaud's own line, Plume. Some of the store's other highlights include upbeat decorative pouches by Papaya, quirky rubber stamps by Yellow Owl Workshop, and all occasions cards by Jonathan Adler in bright, popping prints (like anything by Jonathan Adler isn't in a bright popping print). There's also a good assortment of scented candles and soaps.

Robichaud originally launched the store online, growing her inventory slowly, until the spot on Fremont opened up and she knew she had to jump on the opportunity. She is driven by a passion for design, and a desire to carry products that fit every mood. As she explains, "I get a real rush from searching out new products, and I want people to be as excited about my finds as I am."
