Ok folks, it's that time again, when Portland designers and artists take over an entire floor of the Ace Hotel and deliver their finest presentations and performances. What's cool about Content? It showcases the creation aspect of Portland design. The event grants each participant a room to appropriate and embellish in whatever weird way the designer can invent. The result? Not your standard, mass-produced fashion fare. (Full disclosure: Mercury Managing Editor Marjorie Skinner helps produce the event.)
However, I am excited for some new additions to this year's dream team:
Sarah Vale-Rappe of Portland baggery Sea Echo has the midas touch. Every piece of virgin Pendleton wool this girl touches is pure gold. In the last year her line has popped up on every happening boutique shelf in Portland and I am anxious to see what a whole room of sea echo bliss will look like.
Sword + Fern was missing from last year's lineup so I cheer the studio/shop's return because, let's be real, jewelry designer Emily Baker is the biggest badass around. What sexy fusion of poetry, sea glass, herbs and incense will she brew up?
Poler helps Portland have awesome adventures. Their webpage presents beautifully documented excursions in the Northwest and beyond that feature Poler gear and I am hoping for an sleeping bag/tent Ace slumber party.
Made on the Moon employs Japanese Shibori and experimental dye techniques to achieve their distinct high-contrast, martian mix of swirls and patterns. I've seen their pieces on the legs of some of my favorite lady creatives around Portland and the design team's conceptual approach to textiles is sure to translate beautifully in their Content space.
