Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal, Casino Royale, Valhalla Rising) is charismatic, intense, and a combo of sexy/creepy the likes of which haven’t been seen since Christopher Walken in The Dead Zone. He kills it in the Danish film The Hunt, as a recently divorced kindergarten teacher who’s battling for custody of his teenage son in a small town. When a pouty little girl makes an untruthful allegation about him, his life is shredded before his very eyes. The Hunt is hugely effective at showing the frustrating scope of mass hysteria, and it delivers a thoughtful study of men’s tenuous role in shaping children’s lives. Sadly, it might also serve as a chilling exposé on why male kindergarten teachers and childcare workers are so scarce.
