WHO: Barry Leroy Hampton (aka DJ Mr. B) spins old school tunes at the Shanghai Tunnel. He's also a member of the bands Jackie-O Motherfucker and Big Yeah. He's working on releasing Big Yeah's Portland debut album Wisdom Sees...

What does DJ-ing do for you?

"I'm just hoping that DJ-ing or playing live music will make me as centered as possible. DJ-ing is easier because the music is already there. I like taking music that is old to me, and making it new to other people."

What do you want to be doing in 5 years?

"Sustaining myself as a producer and musician. I want to introduce a really good soul band to Portland. A band without matching suits."

What new stuff are you listening to?

"Busta Rhymes, D'Angelo, Common, Destiny's Child, De La Soul, The Roots. I don't get into as much new as is probably out there. Music nowadays is full of people reinventing themselves, which used to take 20 to 30 years but now takes two or three. I think there's so much information out there that new artists forget that they can be original. It's like new bands get all hyped on old shit, but they don't respect where it came from."
