Resist Raise a Fist for Portland's Old Guard

Resist is/was a good band, but I wonder if thier analysis of contemporary Portland is really honest. It's easy to take potshots at yuppies and trust fund hipsters. I don't like them either, but nostalgia for bygone days is questionable considering the Nazi Skinheads and heroin mentioned in the article. Sure, I miss the days when parts of NW were actually gritty instead of some retiree's urban playland, but I'd rather have that then live in some depressed, racist, dead-end town. For every rich Californian there's gotta be some freak kid from Twin Falls or Fairbanks trying to escape the shit people brag about in Portland now.

By the way what exactly is a social punk? I'm mentioning the part where Resist is called a group of " social/political punks"

Ward here - It's important to know that the 4 or so quotes of mine were taken from a fairly lengthy interview done by Pete and I(the whole interview has been posted on the RESIST myspace page: www.myspace.co/resistportland)... and context is everything. My complaints about 2008 Portland come from watching this town change so drastically - and in so many ways that range from annoying(those darn hipsters) to semi-hostile(from the perspective of a blue-collar local). I don't miss the nazis one bit - It's the other things that I miss - real Henry Weinhard's... Corno's,... being able to park downtown, being able to afford a house(or hell, a pint at a bar) on blue-collar wages. I am more than happy to accommodate the next freak kid(I was one once myself) from anywhere who sees us as a progressive paradise or someplace where it's ok to be gay/etc.. - But no Californian house-flippers, please. Anyhows - check out the whole interview! Peace! Ward
ps - I think Ezra meant "socio-political" but it's just a guess.

Please wait...
