So, what to do about the major traffic jam that happens every week, usually on the weekends too? (Not that the exising bridge is necesarily the problem, but the traffic certainly flows better once you get to the other side). I live in North Portland, and it can take me forever to get home if I happen to go via freeway for whatever reason, because of all the people trying to get back to Vancouver. Sometimes I feel like the Anti-Bridge activists aren't really understanding of part of the problem. What's the solution? And don't say Bikes.

@Ugh - There's also, on average, one accident every day of the year on that bridge.

Reymont, I am surprised that there is only one accident per day, the way people drive. I drive about 40 to 50,000 miles per year in my job and it just amazes me how many people simply can't drive worth a crap. People run red lights, ride the bumper of the car in front of them, change lanes without signaling, drive in bad weather with no headlights on and the list just goes on and on. I escort oversize loads, and it seems that some people would rather die than spend a few seconds or minutes behind a load that can weigh up to 300,000 pounds. That big a load cannot accelerate very fast nor stop very fast, but it seems that the average driver doesn't get it. If you tangle with a big load in your car, guess who loses. And for pete's sake, turn off your driving lights at night. If you can't see to drive in town w/out your driving lights, stay home at night.

Please wait...
