News that Tom Moyer wants to build a 410-foot mixed-use tower on the Park Block at SW Yamhill is indeed "news" to those working at the historic Virginia Café—which has stood on the site since 1922 and will be bulldozed if Moyer's TMT Development company goes ahead with the project. Last Friday, shortly after the Portland Business Journal broke the news, Leah Douvris—general manager at the Virginia for 11 years—told the Mercury, "This is the first I've heard of it." TMT did not return calls for comment. MATT DAVIS

As we went to press—and as the tram was preparing to open to the paying public on Monday, January 29—City Commissioner Sam Adams came up with a "modified tram fare structure" for the Tram Executive Management Committee to consider, instead of charging all public riders $4 per roundtrip. Adams' idea? Anyone with a monthly or annual TriMet or streetcar pass—but not a daily ticket or transfer—rides the tram for free. Everyone else pays the $4 for a roundtrip, or buys a $100 annual tram pass.

Bonus: The tram's free all day Saturday, and Friday evenings after 6 pm, throughout February. AMY JENNIGES
