GOVERNORS FOR MERKLEY
Wasting little time in the race for US Senate, Governor Ted Kulongoski and former Governor Barbara Roberts announced their support for newly christened Democratic candidate Jeff Merkley.
Their Monday, August 13, joint announcement came just two weeks after Merkley, the Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives, filed his candidacy to take down Republican Senator Gordon Smith. Yet it came nearly four months after Steve Novick announced his candidacy for the position.
Still, Novick stayed in good spirits about the gubernatorial endorsements, saying that he's confident Kulongoski will support his campaign after he beats Merkley in the May primary. SCOTT MOORE
COP RULING IMMINENT
The mayor's office is expected to announce its final ruling this week on whether to fire Portland Police Lieutenant Jeff Kaer. Kaer shot and killed a 28-year-old man in January 2006, after Kaer's sister called to report a suspicious vehicle in front of her home.
In a May letter to the officer, Potter cited poor decision-making as the reason he wanted to fire him. But Kaer appealed the decision, and the Portland Police Association—the cop's union—held an arbitration meeting on Monday, July 30. Potter has promised to issue a final ruling by this Friday, August 17. MATT DAVIS
