Like it or not, next Thursday, it becomes official: Bush will be inaugurated for another four-year stint of terror, arrogance and Bible-thumping bigotry.

Whatcha' gonna do? Hopefully a lot! The battle may be over, but that's no reason to surrender.

While Bush may have his way of starting the next four years--with music by Kid Rock and a grammatically incorrect speech--the Mercury is starting the new term with our "Inaugurate This!" Anti-Inauguration Party. Next Thursday, January 20, join the Mercury at Holocene (1001 SE Morrison, doors open at 8 pm, free) for skits from the radio show LiveWire!, raunchy performances from the Radical Cheerleaders, and a special video feed from Washington, as Bush delivers a special message for "all you yellowbellied liberals in Portland, Orygun!" Plus, DJ Teenage will keep the mood festive and make sure you won't slip into depression and slit your wrists.

And while fun is fun, we'll also be presenting a list of ideas and projects to help counter the conservative momentum--and information about how YOU can get and stay involved. We'd hate to see our readership pack up and move to Canada. Screw those guys, let's stay and fight!

How does an Equal Benefit Ordinance sound? Still pissed about the bigots banning same-sex marriage? How about following the lead set in San Francisco and Minneapolis, where the city cannot contract with any company that does not extend benefits to same-sex partners. It's a start!

Or, worried that mega-corporations are taking over the world? How about helping foster small businesses here in town? Sign up to help organize a small business summit where those mom-and-pop shops can brainstorm ways for city hall to be more supportive.

Portland has a remarkable opportunity to become the nation's laboratory for progressive ideas and projects. With the federal government trying to blanket the country in conservative programs and ideas, we need a few strong outposts. (Try to not think about the Alamo.)

Peace and Justice Works will sponsor an all-day anti-inauguration rally at Terry Shrunk Plaza, SW 3rd and Madison, 8 am-6:30 pm. Afterwards, stop by the Holocene (1001 SE Morrison, 8 pm, free) for the Mercury's "Inaugurate This!" Anti-Inauguration Part
