I expected fruitcake, as in 'you're nutty as a...' Something to try w/the thunderbird, perhaps. "What's the word? Thunderbird. Who's them nuts? Ung-u-luts. What's the price? Castratti slice."
I don't regularly eat meat, but I would have liked to have been at this, scrutting balls with you guys.
(I also thought the Sandwich Duel was really funny. That's what completely sold me on Onstad's magnificence. http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/cart…)
The instructions in the Larousse, in full: "Plunge the animelles [ridiculous that you can't find them as an entry under "testicles"] into boiling water for about 2 minutes, cool under cold water, and immediately skin them. Soak them in cold water for about 10 hours to remove impurities, then drain and press between 2 plates".
Who knows what impurities you guys ingested!
arimoces (v): to sputter, and/or choke while talking. Usually after having ingested something unpleasant, like swampy testicles.
(It is actually a very strange typo. For those looking for the typo, please note that it has been changed back to the original word "grimaces" in the on-line version. It is still at large in print.)
I don't recognize--and can't find in any dictionary--the word "arimoces." Little help?
Love this. Love Onstad. Make this a regular feature.
Genius. I grew up with my uncles and cousins dining on balls. I never went there. And, well, I'm probably still not going to. But a great read, nonetheless.
PAC has big balls
You missed to crucial places to drink whiskey! The Highland Stillhouse Pub and North 45! Highland Stillhouse has the BEST Single malt selection in Oregon, and North 45 has over 150 whiskeys on their 250+ bottle wall-o-booze! You also failed to mention Ringlers which has one of the best bourbon selections in Portland! You're missin some good sippin my friend!
Hey, what about cooking? I'm always grilling steaks and eyeballing my whiskey - I'm sure there's some way to combine the two. Add it to the barbecue sauce? Splash it into the pan, like when cooking with red wine?
Dude you missed Highland Stillhouse Pub in Oregon City which has arguably one of the best selections of Single Malt Scotch in the area. Plus it's a really great place to spend a sunny afternoon and watch the Falls
Actually read the book...good tour of all things whiskey.
Well done on this article! I need some whiskey now.
Excellent explanation and that "drag race in a marker factory" description had my crying! Too funny.
One of the best overall articles about whisk(e)y that I've ever read!
Great article. I recently tried a local Oregon Single Malt and was pleasantly surprised. The name is McCarthy's. The distillery is Clear Creek. I had it on a trip to Boston. Haven't been able to find it where I live in Virginia. Anyone else tried it? Makes me wonder about the older-is-always-better orthodoxy...
I wonder how many times this guy has flipped off my 2am order of mac and cheese bites. I hope a lot.
OK, sure, I follow the author on Twitter so I'm a fan - but isn't his writing SO good?! Great article!
Patrick, your writing here is musical and lyrical and all-together a pleasure. Thank You! I have not enjoyed anything from the Portland Mercury this much in a very long time. Keep writing like this, and i'll keep reading.
