Great piece. However, you did overlook explaining WHY DECEMBERISTS DAY IS IN JANUARY

Re: “Me and My Teddy Bear

Playful spirit? this cocksucker is the rudest person I've ever run into on a flight. Last Tuesday PHX-PDX on USair. The jackass takes up a full overhead over his seat then tries to overtake the one across the aisle. Made his wife or whoever was traveling with him to climb over the aisle seat with his fat ass in it to use the toilet. wouldn't even stand up. Flight crew constantly asking him to move his legs out of the aisle. So glad I threw my carry on atop his stupid looking hat. Watching him melt down in that ridiculous costume he wears was worth the price of admission.

Re: “Shake Some Action

Thanks for the coverage. 40+ years since their last visit to NW (and that was a
Seattle-area rock fest) they stroll into KBOO last night on Brandon's Drinking From Puddles show and Callie Danger's DitchDigger Radio and plunge right back into that jangly crackling groove with vocals and 'tude like ya only get on community radio. Po'town blessed with alt media. They oughta look up from their screens every so often and check it out. Keep on doing...

Re: “March of Progress

The Viet Cong were an indochinese militia group. I am sure there is historical relevance to this band. Perhaps the drummer was killed with a bamboo staked booby trap. That would be super cool.

Re: “Strange Melody

I loved her first album, but when I saw Jessica Pratt at Pickathon a couple years back she was a total... prat. Sullen and haughty, refusing to engage with the audience or interviewer to the point of being rude - why agree to perform in that space, then? It was cringe-worthy. I now have a hard time separating her [pretty-good] art from the artist.

I'd be interested to know if she's had an attitude adjustment since or if the move to LA was just to be closer to her people.

I was at two of these. Two! I feel, like, moderately cool right now.

Re: “The Best of 2014

So "Magic Mouth" wants to rape me in the face, but "Black Pussy" is too offensive? Okay, gotcha.

Re: “Dark at the End of the Tunnel

I have seen atriarch with all the preceding bass players and without joe it just isn't atriarch. I wish him a quick recovery so he can play on the next albumand maybe get full credit for his efforts rather than I mention in the liner notes

Or, y'know, the way things are going now, substitute "a decade or two," with "five years from now."

Re: “Last Night in the City

Nope. That was Flossie's. And it was "10 oz. Bone Dinner." Seemingly left over from some earlier steak promotion, I think.

Re: “Last Night in the City

Was this the place with the "14 oz boner" marquee?

Re: “Last Night in the City

The City WAS a bastion for drug dealing and drug use, among other things. I recall a night at the older 13th and Morrison location when Lanny Swerdlow called for the DJ's to stop the music so he could read from an Oregonian article about "homeless youth", where someone had been quoted as saying, "You can find any drug you want at The City Nightclub." This was when the undercover cops and police walkthroughs really started to ramp up.

It still maintained a long life after that as it moved across Burnside to its final location, but the soul and feel of it had been left behind. The truly expressive and creative types that made the City Nightclub the fabulous destination for thousands of GLBT kids through the late 80's had either moved on, or succumbed to heavy drug use and/or HIV and AIDS. I lost many good friends from that time period.

I look back on those days with a bittersweet combination of fondness and disdain. Any happy memories I have of those days should be left in the time capsule of my mind where they belong.

To the folks that just can't seem to find any other validation in their lives except for the need to relive their teenage fantasies about an old Portland institution known for its darker side of gay youth sub-culture and inevitable exploitation I have one message; Grow up and move on.

Re: “Last Night in the City

For all the drug use, it seemed like there were very few raids. I always assumed Lanny was paying someone off.
When it was finally closed, it was loudly and repeatedly suggested that Lanny was taking advantage of the many young men who surrounded him. In the political atmosphere of the time, this was enough. I imagine there wasn't anything going on there that wasn't consensual, but who the fuck knows?

I was once asked to leave for "overt heterosexual behavior." It didn't stop me from attending that place every chance I got: it was fucking wonderful.
