Re: “Making Karaoke Count

i miss portland so much, i don't remember having a hard time singing at chopsticks, but its been awhile. been living in Tucson, for a while and just came home from a bar with what they call 'cutthroat karaoke' supssedly if the crowd boos enough the bartenders will hit a large gong and your song is cut off. however the crowd never booed and i was gonged all four times i went up to sing, and i'm pretty sure, I'm not that bad. so that SUCKS, i think i'd much rather just not get called up, than walk outta there thinking the little hot young cunts tending the bar deserve a mouthfull of my fist.

Re: “Let's Get Gay!

I dont understand comments like" Tongues are made for singing too" . All people need to be seen for who they are inside, the kind of person they are, their soul. Not for who or what they do in bed. Thast whats wrong with alot of straight people..they focus too much on what gay people do in bed when they should be focusing on who they are as a person. So, my point is gay people shouldnt hurt themselves by also focusing on the sex part of it, even through joking. Love is love between two souls..whats between the legs has nothing to do with it.

Thank you. If it wasn't for people like us that are so curious there wouldn't be any type of healthy waste management or new inventive ideas. So to say that people that get bored are boring, choose enlightenment and knowledge over mind numbing things.

Love your article! Our lake here is way down and I was writing on my blog about all the things that are popping up now that the lake is down, and how this is in our drinking water, and then I started thinking about how the poop we flush is also in our drinking water and decided to look up exactly what they do with the poo-poo and found your article. Love, love, love it!! Not only informative, but hilarious! I put a link on my blog to here so everyone (all twelve of my followers) can come and have a belly laugh today, too. Thanks for the great time reading this!!

Re: “Perfection is... Talk Talk's Mark Hollis, Perfectionist Songwriter!

I am sorry to hear that Mark Hollis was so eager to get away from his earlier sound, I think that his first music was and still is exceptional. I don't compare him to anyone else, he has his own particular brand of incredible talent and I wish he did more along those lines. I understand his need for artistic diversity, but damn, I REALLY like his earlier music.

Re: “Trust Me, I'm a Rent-a-Cop

All Portland Patrol Inc. security employees are certified by the State of Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards Training. Approximately half of our staff is certified by the state to provide armed security services. We require a minimum of three years police experience is required for our armed security officers, but currently average approximately twenty-years per officer.

Thanks! Today, my 4 year old asked where the poop goes. My wife and I realized we didn't know beyond, "the pipes under the house and into the ground" My 4 year old was satisfied but I had to know more. We love grass fed beef and I have no problem with the biosolids. Maybe that's why grass fed beef is so much better than feedlot beef. And the grass grows faster and better and likely many more nutrients too. It's a shame that 50% of the methane gas is wasted. Talk about a need to use alternative fuels. Why can't we use 100%? Maybe because the government, in addition to subsidizing corn (mostly GMO corn sadly), also subsidizes the oil industry and also ethanol which diverts corn and other crops from our food supply and drives up food prices. Yes, as more corn is planted for fuel, less other crops are planted for food. Funny how an internet search for info on poop ends up stirring up many more issues in our country. We need to vote for politicians that care about our food supply and health and actually understand these issues!
Most people probably won't understand these comments because they have their heads in the sand but do some research and reading and you will see that I am right. Hope it helps change someone's perspective.
And thanks for the article. Great information!

Re: “A Beautiful Place To Drown

"Beer guzzling hicks" - as opposed to the PBR swilling, puking hipster shitheads that have infested the Hawthorne district?

The Merc's writer's snivel about every type of descrimination under the sun (real or percieved), but you constantly bash those that choose to live outside of Portland.

Fuck you and you snobbery; At least we don't have drunks shitting in our doorways in Sandy.

Re: “Applying the Brakes

Let's just check the hate talk at the door now. Re-read my original comment and you will see that I did actually make a valid point that can be discussed. Here is a summary of my argument:

Statement 1: All homeless people have made a series of choices that led to their homelessness. For some, this may be the result of mental illness (and I'm sympathetic), but the fact that they did not seek care for that is a choice.

Statement 2: If Statement 1 is true, it follows that homeless people have chosen to remove themselves from the rules, responsibilities, protections and privileges of society.

Clarification: My comment in no way are intended to foster mutal respect between myself, readers of the Mercury and the outsized homeless population in Portland. I am actively encouraging critical thinkers to consider why there is so much advocacy for a group that has chosen to remove itself from the protections society affords.

I do not hate homeless people. I do no really respect them either, because anyone who is so little invested in their own well-being doesn't deserve the time my respect takes.

Re: “Applying the Brakes

@ Fuck_the_Homless

"... or mental illness ..." ... "... result of a series of choices."
"... political voice in the City of Portland?"

Your degree of sympathy and empathy is impressive. Your degree of understanding of the problems of mental illness and of homelessness is awesome. Your grasp of & respect for the concepts and the spirit of the Constitution is likewise awesomely impressive!

Tell me, did you choose to present your case as one devoid of sympathy, empathy, understanding, & respect? Tell me, how are your comments (presented as they are) furthering rational discussion or fostering mutual respect or contributing to solution-seeking actions? Did you choose to come across so hate-filled or were you compelled to do so? These are only "Questions I ask expecting no rational reply.".

Re: “Applying the Brakes

Portland needs to stop kowtowing to the homless population. This is getting ridiculous.

I can accept that it is more difficult for some people to provide for themselves or control addiction or mental illness, but the fact of the matter is, homelessness is the result of a series of choices. To choose to become homeless is to choose to remove yourself from society. Our homeless do not pay taxes, nor do they have official residence in the City of Portland. Why should they have a political voice in the City of Portland?

Also, since when is sitting on public right-of-ways a right that should be protected at all? Last I checked, it was called loitering.

Re: “Applying the Brakes

There's something about PDX, deeply ingrained, to always apply the breaks. Whether this, the CRC, etc. It seems to me this has worked for and against us at different times. The Mt Hood freeway comes to mind.
It is funny to think now that Seattle used to sorta be like PDX's kid brother you could pick on.
'What, no Opera House in Seattle? Hmm....'
But I guess Seattle never worried too much about hitting the breaks.
