Hi Rom. Its good to be in high elevation! Portland is near sea level. Just a reminder to everyone.....Look on CL for a free boat! Seriously though.....having scooter or cycle or bike is KEY in a situation where there is no gas or if there are military checkpoints.
Its important to study TOPOFF 4. the drill that took place in Portland in 2007. A critical part of that drill involves the DHS running the city of Portland and controlling who goes in and out of the city. In other words, Portland has already been 'prepped' for martial law style checkpoints.
If you want to get your truck ready for a potential EMP, get a pre 1973 model before the computer chips where put into the ignition.
I believe that what's coming will make a lot of women stronger and more powerful in themselves. This is more than a male issue. In the road, the wife gets stressed out in the beginning and LEAVES the husband and child. This stills of more Hollywood doom and gloom portraying women (again) as the weaker sex which crumbles under pressure. Not a good way to look at the future.
What we really are about at the center is empowering people and teaching them new skills. Not promoting a doom and gloom mentality. Being prepared doesn't not equal being scared nor perceiving that it's the end of the world. History has shown that we have been through this several times and survived...and many of us...will again.
I look not to the end of the world...But to a new found FREEDOM....for the world from the current systems of control. It is obvious to many that it is the government that's noticeably concerned about the end of their empire. If their satellites and weapons of war in space come crashing down due to massive solar CMES bombarding the planet....they and their control structure has a problem. For those of us dreaming of a truly free and organic society...THAT is very good news!
Hey Alex, if/when the shit goes down, I'll likely attempt to make my way to my parents' mountain stronghold in northern california. But I don't know how I'll get there. What's the best way to travel when 1) I only own a scooter, and 2) gas stations will probably not be operational?
Yeah, I thought The Road was only okay.
Im not a huge fan of the road. It was more dark that the reality that is going to be. I think its important to prepare, but not expect ALL HELL to break loose. There will be good men and women out there doing wonderful work. Even here in Portland. Even if we don't agree exactly on what the problem is....Crisis tends to make men out of boys and strong women out of girls. Thank you very much Sarah for taking the time to review this store.
I, too, just read The Road. Zombie cannibals!
I like survival stores. They remind of me of the back section of Boy's Life Magazine. But for grown-ups!
Also, this is an interesting (sociology) book about consumerism and the survivalist subculture: Dancing At Armageddon. http://amzn.to/fsk1fP
I had some friends from Lasalle Catholic High School that had an orgy up there.
Here's what i don't get:
any other time of the year most people wouldn't set foot in a cemetary, let along at night, if they were paid to do so. But on this one single day Lone Fir is transformed into this increasingly tacky & gawdy carnival, fronted as a "history tour", with a $10 entry fee (capitalism, YAY!), & folks line up around the block to get in?!
Next year, i suppose there will be corperate sponsorship, vendors selling cheap shit, & the price will be uped to $15.
Lovely.
Nice piece, Sarah. Ms. Pierce is one of those Portland fixtures. She also ran a cable access show called "Where's the Art" back in the 80's/90's that was a total hoot.
So did she code up the Commodore 64 computer? I wanna know who did that! :)
Great article Sarah! Every out of town guest that visits me always is given a trip to Steph's monument to Art! She is an asset to the community.

@ pattty is it zoned god you are really a fucking idiot it is not ours to ZONE
it is his goddamn property stolen from the natives fair and square let him do with it as he wants
Could the assholes commenting on this be any more entitled? I liked nw better when homeless people shit on the sidewalks there. There's a new stench that comes from gentrification and its less appealing than vagrant dook.
This recycling business may be an eyesore to you mealy-mouthed pussies, but I say god bless the motherfucker for 1. Caring enough about our planet and future to walk the talk. So many of us pay lip service to being environmentally conscious, but the buck stops at the fucking curb where you dump your weeks worth of packaging and leave it up to someone else. And 2. Allowing homeless people to rest at his door. Again, how many of us claim to be compassionate, but cringe at the sight or smell of someone less fortunate than most?
Shame on you.
I think its sick and damaging to those people who aren't guilty and we should look into changing the law to prevent mugshots for profit.
AMAZING!! Is it ZONED for RECYCLING???? What does City Hall Say?? Is this Healthy(vermin)? If this is "his" business WHAT does his home look like and WHERE does he live.........can you IMAGINE???? Its about time Portland DO something about these things instead of BIKE LANES!!!
Eyesore, schmeyesore. If the guy owns the building, and doesn't let it fall into disrepair to the point that it becomes a safety hazard, then he has just as much call to be there as anyone else. If the neighbors don't find the peeling paint and cardboard in the windows genteel enough, fuck 'em. He's been there longer than most of them have, and as a property owner, he's got his rights. This seems to happen every time somebody moves into a neighborhood and fixes up an old house or starts a successful business... Suddenly they feel entitled to demand everybody who was there before start living up to their aesthetic standards. Well tough titties, bo-bos, but I'm afraid you're not the center of the universe. Get used to it.
Hey, at least there's almost always a parking space out front if you want to stop by Anna Bananna's. I was always curious about that place, having lived in the neighborhood for years, but it never bothered me. And honestly, the Starbucks down the street at Lovejoy is the biggest eyesore of all.
Re: “In the Shadows”
