A small group of us wanted to go to a show at Dante’s. So we pre-bought ticket. Normally, I’d buy the tickets at the front door just before the show. But we did not want to chance it being sold out (being Saturday night).
So the night of the show, we are all standing in line. Once we get to the front we all produce our printed tickets. The bouncer takes one look at us and said “That guy cannot come in. He’s drunk.” We are all a little shocked because there are a lot of drunken people getting into the show. What’s so different about us!!! Well there’s one different. We were the only ones that had pre-paid tickets. This means they already have our money.
I tell the bouncer in a cool and calm way, that he is not drink and that we have already paid for these tickets. We can’t just leave one of our guys out side. The bouncer tells us to take him somewhere else, sober him up and come back in an hour. Not wanting to argue, we all walk off.
After an hour of pizza and water, we all go back to Dante’s. The same bouncer is there and as soon as we show up the bouncer immediately says that “he can’t come in he is still drunk”.
I ask if I can talk to a manager. The bouncer tells me he is a manager. I ask if I could talk to another manager. He’s says NO.
We all stand there at the door while the bouncer lets another group of loud drunk people go into watch the show. The group of people pays cash to get in. At that moment it was painfully obvious what Dante’s was up too.
I make a few more attempts to reason with the bouncer, but he is not going to change his mind. At one point he tells me, OK my friend and everyone else in my group can come in except me. We see more and more people go in. They all pay at the door.
I’ve tried calling them the next few days, but no one ever picks up the phone that is listed for that number. And the voice mailbox states that it is full and cannot take anymore messages.
Dante’s may look like a fun place, but they will swindle you out of your cash. Watch out. Go somewhere else.
It's been seven years, and my own review looks dated (separate room for smoking? what's that?). Still, the C continues to be a stalwart favorite.
It hasn't changed too much, and certainly not for the worse. More beers on tap, more pinball. Their food is better and they do brunch on the weekends these days. Get the chef's burger, play some pinball, rinse, repeat.
Solid music, no lines
I agree with previous reviews, but both rooms are hard-surfaced; happy hour was painfully loud. Wait-staff agreed. Plz find way to give all a sonic break.
Bazi has fantastic staff, a great chill atmosphere with great background music, and is passionate about their drinks (which are also fantastic!). Came here on a whim thanks to digital technology, and the experience made me return. Love coming here with a small group of friends.
Wish I was going to be there to hear, "Full Catholic", Love their sound. So bluesy and diverse. I never get tired of hearing them play. I like their original music and the different instruments they use. A night I will regret missing.
I love this bar. Great bar, super staff, and fantastic beer selection
The ABSOLUTE BEST Reuben Sandwich in Portland, Oregon....So thrilled! The House chips are fried on the spot, HOT Crunchy Potatoe chips are to die for....
Awesome place, CLEAN and Fun. Great owner, drink specials, good crowd of clean people! Love it there!
Real food, live music.
Re: Soul Vaccination
My gosh - what a fantastic dance band! Duff's Garage was packed and the music was excellent - SOUL VACCINATION had the dance floor packed for 3 long sets.
This venue also has National acts come through like BILL KIRCHEN and MARIA MULDAUR.
Lots of seating, big dance floor, too.
I'm going back!
I pretty much love this place; the other reviews are outdated and don't hold true for what this bar has to offer now. The food is really high quality -- especially for a bar. Over 20 beers on tap, most of them microbrews. Fantastic service.
This place is wonderful. 25 taps and most of the beer is from the Pacific northwest, the rest from either California or the east coast, and occasionally Europe. The staff are all friendly and knowledgeable, too.
Stopped by this neighborhood charmer for a snack, and sat by the kitchen to watch the show. Was wildly entertained by the chef (eric?) And the soo chef (paul?) As they directed the action and prepared the food. Had a fantastic time, and the food, I'm looking at you pork chops, will bring me back again for sure!
Married men and their wives beware! Ashley is so desperate to get married that she professed her love to a married man, one of her patrons, and attempted to rent an apartment with him! Ashley is uneducated, has a dead end job and is not attractive so she will go to any means to ruin other's lives. She needs to learn about ethics, respect, boundaries, and most of all needs to learn to leave married men alone. I hope her mom enjoys the letter she will be receiving explaining her daughter's exceptional behavior.
One of the nastiest, dirtiest places I've seen!!! STD's offered at a discount!! Don't waste your time or money. Should be closed down!
We started my friend's birthday celebration here the other evening during happy hour, and it was wonderful. We had to wait 20 minutes to be seated, but it was well worth the wait. The atmosphere is incredible, the ahi tuna was melt-in-your-mouth perfect, the crab cakes were delectable and all of our drinks were scrumptious. I had the Diablo, and it was the perfect mix of spicy, tangy and sweet. My friend (who likes more sweet drinks) had the Red Velvet, and it was incredible. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive, despite how busy they were. I live in SE and wish Bartini was closer, but I'll be recommending it to anyone who wants an awesome drink experience in the alphabet district.
great place to watch bands and drink awesome beer
Love this joint
I just moved to Portland and have been going to a lot of restaurants and bars, Laurelthirst is tops on my list....this place has great food ( one of those places where you can ask for some damn simple brown rice with your meal and they have it ) and a close-in mostly free music venue. YES it is a bar. YES it is full of hippies and hipsters. YES this is Portland. YES to the music played here, it is full and varied from rocky soulful blues to acoustic wonders to something I haven't heard yet. Love this place. Rock on.
