I used to like the "Old Portsmouth Club", when they had good, consistant music & food. There are just too many dive bars in the neighborhood to compete with. The owner (and lamest of the Penner clan) seems to have the attention span of a 3 year old. Is it a gay bar? Is it an all ages pizza pub? Or is it a north portland knuckle head hangout? Every couple of monthes it's something different, the only thing that doesn't change is the obnoxious odor. This place is a bad time waiting to happen. Smells like Pee Club.
I just like truckstops. Where else can you grab a shower, a big gulp, and a new C.B. radio?
Good food, good drinks, not expensive (downright cheap at happy hour), decent atmosphere...and you can look really cool to your friends when you wince at the mediocre jazz!
I applaud this restaurant's commitment to gluten-free recipes and sustainable practices. The staff was friendly; attentive, but not too intrusive.
However, I cannot agree with their claims of "Portland's best" fish & chips, and certainly not "World's Greatest Fries." The fish (I had cod, admittedly the least expensive option) portion was small, especially for the price, and the flavor was nondescript. The fries were also definitely middle-of-the-road, even for just Portland, let alone the world.
The New England Clam Chowder wasn't bad, but still, not particularly memorable.
Perhaps "Okayest" is a more accurate adjective than "Best" or "Greatest."
We went to a private party at Aura on a monday night! What a wonderful venue. The "aura" is very chic and classy, as well as having great service. Strangely however I had posted a review @ dante's about the hypnosis show and the very same guy was there doing magic and walk around hypnosis. I don't know if he works at Aura as well, I can tell you it completely added to "aura experience!"
I love it and will be back for more!
We started in the restaurant for dinner - had a wonderful steak dinner - then went over to the night club side. The place was alive with thumping beats and fresh faces dancing their feet off on the huge dance floor. The New Copper Penny is amazing - I remember dancing the night away in the nightclub years ago. I love the updates - the leather couches in the upper lounge were awesome. Plenty of action on the pool tables and the covered outdoor smoking area was great! (a nice change from open sidewalks in the rain) I can't wait for another girls night out - I know we will make this a regular stop
+ Rad shows, friendly people, best mix between house show and larger venue, long running Portland underground staple, record store upstairs...
- No alcohol, depending on the show the crowd age varies a lot (sometimes it's infants & sometimes it's dentures), No alcohol, long bathroom lines...
I love this place like I love ... vodka. So a lot. Giant Jenga is crazy rad and who doesn't love a bar with no windows? Less distraction ... more drinking.
i love the new dude. he's a dreamboat. he looks good in tight pants. i'm not gay or nuthin', but he's the best! hire him and put him in the go-go cage. don't let him out!
I wish they didn't have walnuts in so many of their dishes because I'm allergic, and they really could stand to streamline the ordering process a bit or at least have a giant menu behind the counter. But when it's all said and done, they make some damn tasty food. I don't think I've ever had anything that was less than really good. Mostly stellar.
This has to be one of the best Chinese restaurants I have been tol Everything is so fresh and delicious. I had the Mongolian beef and it melted in my mouth. My wife had the snow pea chicken and said it was the best she ever had. Shandong is our new favorite Chinese restaurant.
Cool spot, but...they water down their booze!
We were out for date night last Friday, tromping down 28th and having a drink at a few places along the way. We ordered a can of Olympia and a shot of Jameson each. We each took a sip of the Jameson and both said "this is watered down!" simultaneously. We drink Jameson at home, so we know the familiar and lovely bite.
Hopefully they will be shamed into changing their ways.
Great place to wile away some time and shoot the shit with the odd cast of characters that live here (and play FREE shuffleboard). Yeah, there are some hipsters around but not as many as most other places. Drinks are strong and the Bartenders arent miserable burnouts. Also a good spot to watch Blazer games if you dont want fanboys screaming in your ear.
Great new music venue! Awesome live music almost every night. The Halloween Show with The Prids was dope. 3 pinball machines, darts, pool, horse shoe pit, giant jenga and an awesome back patio with huge bay window so you can watch the stage while outside. The best part, $2 micro brews everyday from 3 - 8! All micros!!!
Dang. We came in there on a cold, rainy night and both had a tasty and reasonably priced sandwich and truly excellent beers. It was cozy (maybe some could say, "cramped"?), warm, and a tad bit loud (it was Tuesday, beer special night). Overall, it was a great experience. The server was great, prompt and nice w/o being pushy. Oh, and the other reviewer mentioned "fratboys"? Holy shit; try living in Corvallis or Eugene for a year.
FOOD WAS AWFUL; crab cakes were more like fried fish, they smeared a sauce on top trying to be fancy but it was simple tarter sauce, I had clams as an entree but they tasted weeks old and the sauce was horrific, my man had the prawn linquini that I think he got drunk on cause it tasted like liquor...we love dining out and trying new places but save yourself the trip and don't waste the money here! The name says it all, Hobos would eat here.
This place is charming and gave me a nostalgic feeling. I love that they serve little plates of cookies and the outdoor area is lovely when weather permits. This being said I can only agree with all the above in regards to the service. The staff take the glimmer out of the environment, there's soooo much potential for this little gem to be a magical spot and it's just let go, and may i dare say that it's a lot of egoism and image that are to blame. :( YOU work in a cafe! Get over yo-self, the staff have easiest job in the world because no emphasis seems to be placed on quality of service...Employees make or break a place- END OF.
First of all, everything I'm about to say is 100% true. Maybe bad luck, but ABSOLUTELY TRUE.
1 - received burned pizza
2 - drinks were a little high priced
3- staff was less than friendly
4 - required my ID to keep a tab, which is fine, but when I asked for it back, they gave me a piece of paper instead that said they had given it to someone else. I never got my ID back and they were less than apologetic. Won't step foot in there again. Period.
Good job. Real winners.
$12.50 for hamburger and eggs on a piece of bread with a hash brown hockey puck???? no thanks.
