This article is totally confusing. "The Law Center ranks it as one of the nation's worst for gun control, behind states like California and New York that have their own bans on most assault weapons." But then immediately after it says that the gun bans work. Huh?? It also states that violent crime is down since the 1994 gun ban, but fails to note that that ban has long since ended. It then lumps gang related shootings and stabbings together. So will a gun ban lower gang related stabbings? I am surprised that this article was allowed to be printed. It only weakens the pro gun ban stance in my opinion. On the other hand, maybe that was the point.
@Graham - Running torrents through Tor is highly discouraged. Easier option: find a torrent that supports SSL encryption. Secure Socket Layer prevents Comcast from seeing what you're downloading by encrypting your connection. Or, a VPN would work too, but that will cost money, it’s redundant to SSL, and unless you’re paying a couple hundred a year, you’re connection will be significantly slower. In a couple years just about every torrent will support SSL, in the meantime, look out for torrents that say "Secure Download" on your tracker and stay current with your torrent client apps (i.e. install those goddamn Vuze updates). “Secure Download” works on many of the largest tracker sites, use this. Don’t be afraid.
At peak times, 1/3rd of the data flowing on the internet is torrents. You have nothing to worry about. I'd bet there's an equal number of internet porn watchers as there is torrent users, so you're a needle in a haystack. Think about: who do you know that doesn’t use torrents? And, why haven’t you taught them how?
Read the Crypto Anarchist Manifesto. It explains why this is happening and what the reaction is. It was written in 1992, and we’re here, now. Cryptology is the zeitgeist of the time:

Next, ask yourself: What is a bitcoin? And, can I really buy marijuana with it?
..and there are deputy da's who have violated privacy policies for their own personal interests. Yet another conundrum.
...and the MCDA's office has personally kept deputies they supervised who lied...without even putting a write-up in their employee file.
Buuuuuuuuuuuuuut there is evidence floating around that exposes the MCDA's office has lied. What a conundrum.
This is just another scheme make information & media available to only people with the means to access it. I can see how cafe owners are victims in this "crime" but government agencies could devote their resources to something much more worthwhile like, oh I dunno...infrastructure, highways, building a functional railway system. Oh wait, I forgot, the government is in the pocket of those telecom companies.
The people pirating are mainly using the .torrent protocol which can be blocked at the router. This aint rocket surgery. Otherwise people can learn Tor or VPN and tell telecoms to fuck off
Yet even further proof that there is NO honor amongst these pigs!
When it comes to these pigs, generalizing is very well justified and called for! They certainly have no scruples about generalizing the public at large. In L.A., the police have indiscriminately opened fire upon innocent civilians several times over the past 3 or 4 days!
@ WifePoisonedMe:
Really?? ALL cops?? Every single one of them?? Wow, it's THAT simple, eh?
The Portland police are pedophiles and murderers and they don't care about people or the law they break the law all the time and never stand trial in a criminal court room for it so they just don't care!
Cops always label their victims as mentally ill to vilify the victim and to discredit the victim as a witness not to mention it makes cops look like good guys when they do this!
Cops always WANT to appear justified when they are not so they will have a whole harem of mental illness experts portray the victim as mentally ill to cover the cops butts!
The man is dead, he is unable to deny the allegation of mental illness, so the cops and their experts will repeat the phrase mental illness over and over again to cover up an obvious murder committed by police officers!
Cops and cop supporters are known to target anyone that publicly complains about criminal actions committed by cops!
Anyone that publicly complains about cops on blogs immediately gets treated as mentally ill, someone will purposely target someone on a blog and imply they need their meds, as an example!
You can find examples of this on this very webpage because cops are so obvious about it.
Graham, off your meds again huh?
And that some of these filthy-ass cops blatantly LIED about Chasse and deliberated denied him medical coverage after giving him that work-over... MAN!!! Why not one single bastard-ass pig has been criminally charged with MURDER over this - not even FIRED - is beyond insane!
WHO THE FUCKING SHITBAGBALLS IS LETTING MATT DAVIS HAVE A VISA INTO THE USA?!? I AM GOING TO CONTACT BLUMENAUER AND THE STATE DEPARTMENT AND GET HIM EXPELLED.
Miserable, murdering, dirtbag PIGS! A serious black mark for Portland, this is.
Pete: I really hope you and the chief, and anyone who'd like to come from the union, come along to the premiere. The more police in the audience the better. And thanks for delivering a comment on the article here.
The following email was sent to Denis in response to questions about the film Alien Boy, albeit after the print deadline:
"The Chief and Police Bureau aren’t going to offer any thoughts on the film itself. As Chief Reese has said repeatedly since he took office in May 2010, the death of James Chasse was a tragedy that deeply impacted his family, the community and the Portland Police Bureau.
"Since the Chief has taken over, the Bureau has implemented numerous improvements to its response to those who suffer from mental health issues. As we move toward a settlement agreement with the DOJ, the Bureau will be making additional improvements. Here’s a link to many of the policy and training changes that were implemented following the death of James Chasse as well as a matrix of changes that the Bureau has adopted in regard to use of force and mental health response since 2006: http://www.portlandoregon.gov/police/61442
"Though these improvements will never change what occurred on September 17, 2006, it is our hope that police officers and mental health providers will have better systems in place to respond to those vulnerable people in our community who need us the most."
Sgt. Peter Simpson
Public Information Officer
Portland Police Bureau
That image of all the cops and paramedics standing around shooting the shit and sipping coffee over James' beaten and dying body still sickens and enrages.
Fucking murderers.
Gets me pissed off all over again.
Re: “Steamroller Charlie”
Hales is right! The prior administration did not pay attention to maintenance, and I can say because maintenance doesn't get votes! And what's more, the Portland Mercury can quit holding up the previous mayor's picture with one hand and realize the obvious: It was the new, expensive and flashy programs that got Scam Adams popular so he went after them and avoided the maintenance issues, and so it was with the bicycling. Remember when Scammy described the bike infrastructure in Portland as antiquated? Portland was voted as one of the most bike-friendly cities in the country, and often the friendliest, long before Scam was mayor. Now even the bicyclist can't get through potholes. Portland Mercury, quit being so skeptical of Hales and write like you care about the city, not the Scam!
