Hmm ... two drummers ... large, extended improvs ... fans obsessing over set-lists. So, are Modest Mouse the new Greatful Dead, or are their fans just the new Deadheads?

The first time I saw Modest Mouse was at Stage 9 here in Portland in 1997. There were four bands total and nearly as many musicians as there were people in the audience. I am agoraphobic and enjoy sold out shows like getting my teeth pulled. Well, I had tickets to the last show, but the thought of the sweaty crowd and its mentality did me in, so I sold out for twice the price despite offers of triple. The phone rung off the hook til showtime.
