Powder comes to the Pearl on November 22 when the Art Institute of Portland, Salomon & Bonfire Snowboarding, along with all their friends at US Outdoor and Scion present: THE SECOND ANNUAL BACKYARD BANG RAIL JAM! From noon until 4 pm there are no lifts and no limits, as 30 of the best local and national snowboarders bang the king-sized jib in front of the Art Institute on NW Davis between 11th and 12th Avenues. Last year this event was covered by all of the local media, as well as major snow and skate magazines, and received thousands of hits on YouTube.

Now you can join in on the fun and win big with… the Mercury's SHOW US THE BANG video contest.


And it's so simple! Just bring your video camera and capture the action at the Backyard Bang. After the event, edit your video into a 30-second work of art, and post it on YouTube. Then register your video on this site by 5 pm on Monday, January 5th 2009.

Three winners will be chosen in the following categories:
  1. Best Overall
  2. Best Action
  3. Best Lifestyle
  4. Winners will be chosen the week of January 5, 2009 and announced in the Mercury on January 8.

    The grand-prize winner will receive:

    • Two unrestricted lift tickets to Mt. Hood Meadows (courtesy of Mt. Hood Meadows)
    • One jacket from Bonfire
    • Samples from Paul Mitchell
    • Skull Candy headphones (limited-edition Salomon collaboration)
    • More great second- and third-place prizes to follow!


    • Rules and Regulations:

      • The Film must not exceed 30 sec.
      • Five Submissions per filmmaker.
      • Registration of the film must be made here by 5pm on 12/30.
      • If your movie is selected for showing, you will need to provide a copy on DVD‐R as a .mov document by 12/04.
      • Must be an original work. And may not contain any copyrighted information.
