Sister's of the Road is a standout in a city full of amazing, grassroots, nonprofit organizations. Feeding somewhere around 400+ meals per day to Portland's homeless, poor and anyone who wants a decent cheap meal since 1979. They serve 3 dishes per day, one is guaranteed to be vegetarian. Each meal costs $1.25 and can be paid for with cash, food stamps or by bartered work. Meal coupons are also available for $2 each (the difference goes to offset costs) Mondays is all day breakfast, Tuesday & Wednesday are chef's Choice, Thursday it's Italian and Friday is Mexican. Stop on by and have a meal or volunteer some of your time.
*Note* Sister's of the Road was 2007's Mercury Charity Auction's proceeds recipient.
Higgins is one of the stars on Portland's fine cuisine map. Elegant yet not pretentious, Higgins was a pioneer in the movement toward local and sustainable ingredients. The seasonally changing menu reflects Northwest cuisine via traditional French cooking, with quite a few vegetarian selections. Great place to go when you don't mind plunking down a chunk of change.
