Just a note to say thanks to the house baker there for the addition of scrumptious homemade from-scratch pies, including a vegan peach-brown sugar pie and a vegan blueberry or blueberry-apple. The only drawback? No a la mode available. Petition the owner! The goodies are house baked, and the sandwiches are second only to Grand Central for quality and toothsomeness on Hawthorne, IMO.
I really have enjoyed the political memorabilia at this joint, and I really like the neighborhood (especially the international grocery and Ya Hala), but I have to say that the Bipartisan's legendary pies are being outdone the last couple of months by the homemade pies over at Common Grounds on 43rd and Hawthorne. The pie crust at Common Grounds is just out of this world, while I have found the crust at Bipartisan to be a bit tough. I was told that Common Grounds bakes all their goodies in-house, including vegan scones for those so inclined. So far in the pie parade, I have seen Granny Smith apple, pumpkin, pecan, peach-brown sugar, blueberry and blueberry apple, rhubarb, marionberry, boysenberry, coconut custard, lime icebox, and some other variations. The food, the coffee, and the atmosphere are all really good. I'll go to both places, depending where I happen to be. But I'll only spend money for pie at one.
