I am a woman, and old enough to be Smith's mother, although I am not related to him or his family in any way.
I am acquainted with him as well as his father, stepmother, and wife.
I don't consider a drunken fraternity party incident where he wasn't the aggressor to be the same as "violence against women." I got decked by a drunk guy once when I was in college too. I was not entirely sober myself and I do not feel that that incident held any cosmic meaning about the character of the drunk guy who decked me.
I support Jefferson Smith because I believe that he would be a better Mayor than Charlie Hales, and because I also believe him to be a better human being than Charlie Hales.
Thanks for endorsing Amanda Fritz. She is the closest thing to a real grassroots city commissioner and cares passionately about husbanding tax dollars and city resources. And I don't trust Mary Nolan, either. Nolan is only running for City Council because it pays better than the legislature and she's tired of driving to Salem. I also don't approve of her choosing to run against the only woman on City Council instead of taking a shot at the open seat. OH, I SEE: the open seat is the seat Steve Novick ran for, and she was afraid to run against him, so she decided to run against Amanda instead.
As for Mayor, well, predictably, you got that one wrong. I can't trust Charlie Hales. He just unilaterally decided to break his own campaign finance rules because they were inconvenient. He quit his term on the City Council halfway through because he got bored and wanted to make more money, and he's in bed with the PBA and the real estate developers.
I'm voting for Smith.
Seriously, Charlie Hales has no principles at all, beyond pure expediency and what is good for Charlie Hales.
Euphonius, you could not be any more patronizing if you tried. And I can tell you ARE trying, so please be advised that it is OK to stop now. Really, son, your concern-trolling on behalf of womankind is lovely and much appreciated, but basta, baby.
Sometimes the police (just like MLB umpires and NFL referees) make mistakes. That's when charges get dropped. Like this time.
According to the Eugene police there aren't any court papers or other records of this incident, so all we know is that the witnesses who have come forward, at least two of whom are female, corroborate Smith's account of what happened.
But nonetheless you, an anonymous Internet concern troll, have decided that it will serve your preferred candidate if you use the vocabulary of domestic violence to attack a political opponent. In so doing, you dishonor all men and women who work to end domestic violence and who support the survivors of such violence. I don't care how many shelters you volunteer in or Take Back the Night marches you walk in, you have forfeited my respect and the respect of anyone who knows what domestic violence is, and how serious a matter it is.
You ought to be deeply ashamed of yourself. You're not, of course, because concern trolls never are. Charlie Hales ought to be ashamed of you too. I hope he is, but I'm not optimistic.
Thanks for reminding me to make another contribution to Amanda Fritz.
As for this memo, it will be very interesting to see whether Hales created it using resources belonging to his private employer, but ultimately what interests me is the cynical them-vs-us way the document refers to the left-of-center voters who are, after all, the mainstream of Portland voters. Charlie Hales is not one of us, although for the next couple of months he would like us to think so.
I can't wait till November so we can get a Mayor who thinks this way, and talks this way. Like a regular person, only smarter.
Rich bachelor #7, I was at the Earl Blumenauer thing last night too, and I saw Jefferson behaving in a way that seemed appropriate to the occasion, but I'm quite sure he did not manage to speak with everyone in the room. I'm sorry your girlfriend and you didn't get to talk to him. But I've never seen him *refuse* to talk to anyone, even those who disagree with him.
