Re: “Why I'm Done With "Geek Culture"

Holy shit. Why is the longest thing I've read on Blogtown about something so petty and inconsequential??? Get over yourself and welcome to the 21st Century, where subculture has lost all meaning.

Re: “I, Anonymous

It was incorrect for the person to proclaim that there are no lines in Portland, because that's just ridiculous. This is the only city I've been in where people DO wait in line for a drink. I think people just really like waiting in lines here. Whether its for a drink, for brunch, or for a donut.

But, while you're all queuing up in a cute little line at the bar, I'm gonna go take that empty spot down a ways and probably order ahead of you. It's a bar, that whole long counter is designed for multiple people to hang out, drink, and order drinks. Its been happening that way for many many years.

Re: “Twitter Is Great Because of Its Limitations

While I appreciate the importance of Twitter for getting out news quickly and enabling a voice to oppressed populations (see Turkey, Egypt, etc.), complaining about how Twitter is sapping the fun and creativity out of its service really sounds like a first world problem. Grow up and stop acting like a massive social media company was designed just for you and that the whole world cares about how witty you can be in 160 characters. If you want to be constrained by form, write some poetry for fuck's sake.

Re: “I,Anonymous

Your options:

1.) Get your pet registered as a companion animal, thus making it illegal for the landlord to charge you extra rent. (Bonus: You can basically live anywhere with your animal if you do this, even at "no pets allowed" places)

2.) Rent elsewhere. No one is forcing you to live at a place that charges $100 extra a month for pets. Find a place that doesn't or has pet rent for less. Can't find anything where you want to live? Look further out. Then you can write another I, Anonymous post complaining about gentrification or how so many people move here that it forces the rental market up.

Re: “Ring of Fiber

@Arem, it isn't Comcast's copper wires that Frontier isn't allowed to use, its CenturyLink's. It goes back to the days of traditional telephone exchanges. You only had one residential telephone company accessing an exchange. Hence, you won't find Frontier (formerly Verizon) anywhere you find CenturyLink, and vice versa, because they run different exchanges.

That's regarding their telephone and DSL lines. Frontier FIOS is a different matter completely, and has nothing to do with access to Comcast or CenturyLink's lines. Frontier was supposed to maintain and expand their FIOS when they took over Verizon, but they really haven't done much of either.

Re: “Portland Makes Google Fiber Shortlist!!!

People really need to get vocal about this. When the City published it's "Broadband Strategic Plan", they relied on input from Comcast and CenturyLink regarding the level of broadband competition in Portland. Their verdict? Portland is already a competitive enough market. See page 35:

Re: “Let's Stop Placating the "Professional Cuddler"

The real story here should be about how touch-deprived we are as a society that this sort of thing could even become a business. This woman hit a niche market, which is what every entrepreneur aspires for. But, hey let's just make fun of her and call it all bullshit instead.
