Mike is the founder of Showbacker, a platform for users to crowdfund their favorite bands.
As the owner of showbacker.com, I am happy to explain. I am not a huge Radiohead fan, but I thought Radiohead would be a good test for a proof of concept. Showbacker is trying to build a site where the fans truly can help bring their favorite bands to town. Past sites have failed because there is no financial commitment. We do not charge until the show is booked, and so if we fail, no one is out money.
I agree not having a venue, date, or time of show is difficult. Hence why we are trying to prove the concept. It simply hasn't been done before. Ticket prices are based off average ticket prices for a show for a specific band. We are trying to work through this process, but again, we don't charge folks until the show is guaranteed, and so no one is at risk of losing money.
Finally, Radiohead is only the first band we are testing. We are going to roll out a few more bands shortly including a local band that has difficulty getting into small venues (e.g. Doug Fir) as well as mid-range bands that would do well at Roseland or the Crystal Ballroom. If you are passionate about seeing a band, please let me know: firstname.lastname@example.org.
You can also tell us on Twitter (@showbacker) or on our Facebook page (facebook.com/showbacker). We are definitely interested in your opinion. Rather than bashing Radiohead, how about you share who you would like to see.
