I volunteered for this in college, and fully believe that it's essential to public safety and the health of the individuals. Individuals came in to drop off hundreds of needles from many users who were too afraid or sick to come in themselves. Where else would these have gone? Trashcans and under park benches. It also was one of the few times the person could sit for a minute and do things like organize their bag, pick up condoms and band-aids, and feel comfortable in the clinic without feeling like a patient.
That's my hood and I don't agree with their views, but they're a religion. They can spout whatever they want. That's the point. Engage them civilly and intelligently, or not at all. A kiss-in is cute. Hateful comments on a blog are not.
I am part of this bike sharing system in Mexico City, and it's awesome. You see people on it constantly, the bikes are well maintained, and it cuts down on inner city driving tremendously.
Todd is right, nobody in this situation would read the Portland Monthly. That was my first thought too.

Holy cats, can you imagine if PICA made its programming fun for everyone? I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. Gatz might make a stunning reality tv show, though.
I think this demonstrates that you cannot sit or lie on the MAX tracks. That seems reasonable enough.
