Sarah, just a note on your headline... while we have nothing against our neighbors in Lents, the Mt. Scott Community Center is actually right in the heart of the wonderful Mt. Scott-Arleta neighborhood. You weren't in Lents.
Thanks, David Bragdon. I love your writing and the way you are communicating with us, your constituents. Keep it up. And, nice fen.
Spencer Hahn is no hippy lawyer. He is one of the smartest defense attorneys in Portland and chooses to work for one of the public defender offices in town. He acts in the interest of his clients, not himself.
Some of his clients, though he is not allowed to know which ones, are on a secret list that gives them different treatment from his other clients. Do we really expect public defenders to be able to fairly represent their clients when they don't have all the information about how decisions are being made? This is a matter involving basic constitutionally protected rights and every person in this city should be worried about the precedent set by this secret list.
You guys are hilarious, and a little bit sad. This was a post about having fun in the snow, and also about being stuck because she didn't want to ride her bike home on the ice. Driving wasn't the issue. Can't you just let a girl have a little winter adventure?
What gets me every time I think about this case is that if we had real community policing, this would not have happened. By all accounts from those who knew Chasse, he moved within this 10-15 block area, and seems to have been recognized by many who lived and worked in the same vicinity. The police were the strangers in that neighborhood. If the police walked a beat in that area, they would have already known him (and his mental illness) and he may have had some level of trust of them.
And, Guffman, you are not the only one still scared by this. The police actions in this case only serve to make citizens more afraid - and more likely to react exactly the way James Chasse did to an attempted police stop.
Amy,
Are you sure about the name of the judge? James A Redden is a federal judge in Portland.
In the short amount of time you've lived here, I guess you haven't realized that Portland has lots of mixed-use neighborhoods, and lots of people living and working in "shitty warehouses". Take a walk through the Central Eastside industrial area and you'll find some of the coolest buildings in town with some of the most creative things happening in them. I'm glad you're getting out and having lots of Portland experiences, but I hope you won't get in the habit of dismissing whole areas of town based on your initial perceptions.
Working, working, working.
