Re: “Another Beer Tax Post to Delight and Astound

Beer has been failing to pay its way for years. It is WAY past time to catch up. This industry needs to carry its treatment capacity burden just like gambling or any of these things. They get the profit, they get the cost. It is about what kind of community we want to live in. Human needs, like alcohol treatment, have to trump profit. End of discussion.

The idea that retailers have to charge 30 cents to recoup 20 cents should be considered consumer fraud.

Re: “Trimet Makes Ticket Machine Changes

Good job, Dude!

One of the first management books to hit the popular press, back in the ancient mid-20th century, said that every organization needed somebody whose job it was to wander around identifying BS, and pointing and shouting at it 'til it was fixed. In the current tyranny of niceness, anybody capable of doing that job has quit or been purged from public agencies. Excellent to see the press take up some of the slack.

Re: “Richard Cohen on Rick Warren

Warren also says women should be subservient ("submit" is the word he uses) to their men, abortions are like the Holocaust and humans and dinosaurs co-existed.

I am terribly disappointed. What a tragedy that Obama couldn't pick a minister that at least believed in science, let alone respects LBGTs and women. Heartbreaking.

Re: “Details on the City's Baseball Stadium Task Force

Note they are saying no net loss of sports fields. Should be NO NET LOSS OF GREEN AND/OR OPEN SPACES.

Time for a no-net-loss of green and open pledge by all elected officials. One would imagine that Portland wouldn't need that. One would imagine that elected officials would be immune to inducements to betray greenspaces. Not anymore!

The whole purpose of these kinds of blue ribbon committees is to give the elected officials cover to do something they know that the majority of those who voted for them would abhor.

Write and call City Hall, early and often on this one. No sacrifice of green and/or open space. Not negotiable.

Re: “Cops Want To Change "Diminished Capacity" Legislation For Street Drunks

Why is it OK to intervene to stop someone from killing themselves with a gun or pills, but not alcohol? I don't think there is any good excuse for this. Some street drinkers are in obvious need of long term nursing care, not just detox and dump.

Re: “Bojack Has Anon Attacker By The Balls

The values Jack expresses on his blog are faultlessly progressive. They include preservation and equitable distribution of public goods, fiscal responsibility, and transparency. Those who criticize him are either hogs at the public trough and their minions or citizens falling for "progressive washing".

While we are at it, anybody who advocates for greenspaces, parks and related public goods, equitable distribution of public goods, etc, needs to take a very close look at the Portland Comp Plan revision currently being railroaded through on the fast track. Citizens got a tiny window for front end comment, but one can guarantee that fat cats with their fangs sharpened for private profit at public expense got their markers in.
