DC, readers and the comics biz community are free to do whatever they like, and they apparently have here. But what do his views have to do with whether he can write a good comic script? Jonathan Richman is a total asshole, but I still love my Modern Lovers albums. John Cusack is a notable dick, but how can you never watch Better off Dead again?
If what he wrote was horribly bigoted and inappropriate for a Superman comic, THEN get upset. Or at least get upset at him in the fora where he is making his bigotry known. What it has to do, on principle, with making art I have no idea.

I fully reject the idea that Smith would offer a "free cake and ice cream" approach. He was far more fiscally careful with his campaign than was Hales, and their primary differences were Smith's unwillingness to offer developers big tax breaks and support the $4b CRC bridgedoggle as Hales does.
You are right that much of what will result is the fault of prior admins and mainly the sour economy.

Drunk, when you make national stories out of a talk you gave at the TedX forum and a legislative Rickroll prank, you make friends around the nation. Those donors have no interest in seeing their own agenda served; they know or have seen Jefferson in action and like what they see, want that kind of leadership in general for America. The coal companies, developers and trade unions have no such altruistic motivation for their donations. That's the pertinent difference.
