Looks to me like HKHP has a number of sock puppets of their own, down-rating every comment critical of forced medication and up-rating every pro-fluoridation comment, no matter how snarky or stupid. No doubt this is part of the big money pro-flouridation campaign's "social media strategy," wherein they pay a couple of techies to monitor these news stories and comments threads 24/7, create multiple identities, and gin up an illusion of that massive support for their cause which just doesn't exist in reality.
You would think that with all the support that fluoridation supposedly enjoys, we'd see the red-and-white "vote yes" lawn signs outnumbering the blue-and-white "vote no" signs by a margin of about 7-to-1. But in reality, it's just the opposite.
Corporate largess and deceptive TV & print media campaigns have in the past defeated grassroots campaigns like Clean Water Portland's effort... back in the 90s, PGE spent millions to trick Portland ratepayers into eating the cost of decommissioning the Trojan nuclear plant. Will filthy money from agribusiness (filtered through the ADA, the OHA, etc) succeed in convincing us to allow the dumping of toxic fertilizer waste into our drinking water? We'll know in a week.
You snarky douchebags don't seem to understand the principle of "informed consent" or the "precautionary principle." You just lump everyone who's concerned about the intentional addition of a lead and arsenic contaminated industrial waste product into our environment as a selfish privileged whitey or an Alex Jones worshipping nutbag.
Fortunately your many lame attempts to marginalize the opposition to this end run around the democratic process appears to be failing: measure is trailing by several points according to the latest polling.
In sum, dear Mercury, go fuck yourselves with a fluoride suppository.
A pox on the mayor and the entire city council (except for Steve Novick). Why the fuck are we pissing away over $5 million on installing equipment with which to poison our drinking water with flouridation chemicals while at the same time laying off city employees due to this horrendous budget deficit?
This is the same mindset we see on display in DC, where the corrupt scum who "represent" us cozy up to the rich, fattening the wastrels at the Pentagon while destroying what remains of our social insurance programs.
Flouride makes tap water taste shitty. I have lived in places where the water is flouridated, and there is a huge difference. One thing I really love about this city is the fact that our water tastes good.
"Let's base school upgrades on each individual school's ability to improve it's academic standing and graduation rate."
BokChoy's observation that "PPS is failing the children" would make sense only if BokChoy him/herself attended PPS, judging by his/her failure to use proper punctuation: "it's" should be "its."
Vote yes. HELL yes!
Alurbase: Many more than 4000 jobs will be lost if these measures fail. Why? For starters, Oregon will miss out on nearly a BILLION dollars in matching federal funds. There will be mass layoffs of teachers as school districts slash budgets. College tuition will go WAY up, forcing a lot of students to abandon their educations, which in turn will cause more layoffs in the community college & state university systems. Unemployed workers will have to pay state taxes on the first $2400 of their unemployment benefits, creating more hardship and stifling demand. Result? Less jobs.
Plus, the Oregonian is a lying shit rag: its owner, Steven Newhouse, an out-of-state multi-millionaire, simply doesn't want to pay his fair share of taxes, despite all the benefits he derives from the state's infrastructure & educated workforce. I wouldn't believe his OBA-supplied stats if he paid me to.
In sum, if the people in this state are too stupid (or lazy) to support this modest, targeted tax increase on those few who have prospered obscenely well during the past 3 decades, then they deserve to live in a hellhole like California has become.
merc_crem: that's a cardboard cutout of McCormick's face tied to a real raw chicken.
