To sirs Al M and Tone:

Let me see if I understand the point you gentlemen are attempting to make in your quaint, rather primitive manners.

According to your comments, it is an acceptable situation that automobilists create a "critical mass" from Salem to Longview, Hillsboro to Sandy, twice a day, Monday through Friday, in the form of a "rush hour". These critical mass phenomena create impassable congestion while injecting thousands of tons of hydrocarbons into the air, thereby creating the wonderful smog for which Portland is renowned worldwide. I believe this to be an accurate summation of your position.

What you appear to be strenuously objecting to is the one day a month when bicyclists create a like "critical mass". This, apparently perturbs you gentlemen to the point of rudeness and a plea for the aid of the Almighty as if you have a very low tolerance for anything you either don't do, i.e., bicycling, or that might inconvenience you in the slightest way in the important business of your day.

Admittedly, hundreds of bicyclists together at one time in one place may create a rolling bank of body odor mixed with a bit of methane emission. And yes, this many bicyclists together at one time and in one place will block traffic. You are quite right in this observation.

This "critical mass" of bicyclists occurs once a month in a location announced publicly well in advance so you may take the opportunity to avoid this area should you so choose.

To put this entire issue into perspective, automobile drivers create forty-two or forty-four times as many "critical masses" in a given month. I believe that to you gentlemen, this is preferable to the bicyclist's critical mass?

This seems to my simple mind to be a fairly complete disconnect with reality on your part. Perhaps you blog on this site just to see your name in print, as it's obvious you have little skill in this manner of communication. Perhaps you just write out whatever comes first to your minds without consideration of its import.

Whatever the reason, your comments seem to this commentator ill conceived and ineptly expressed, but to give you credit, you do express a joy similar to a young child yelling "Look at me, look at me," after defecating without assistance for the first time.

Don't go anywhere Big Nance. You are not without fault, either. Far too many bicyclists are rude, inconsiderate, arrogant, careless and potentially dangerous in their riding behavior. Fortunately, bicyclists lose 100 times out of 100 in a physical confrontation with car, truck, bus, curb or any other miscellaneous immovable object you might consider. A great many of these dolts haven't the instinct of self-preservation to protect their head. Hopefully, this combination of behaviors will bring about a winnowing out of more than a few of the egregious many. I do not wish ill on anyone, but in this case they bring it upon themselves, and to that I say, good riddance.

Finally, Big Nance, please don't gloat. It does not accomplish anything, and makes you look shallow, almost as shallow as Al M and Tone appear in their commentary.

Please excuse my intrusion into your illuminating discussion.

I remain your humble servant,

Jacomus

I'm all for bikes, but this just always seemed really damn self-righteous. Especially doing it at rush hour.
