It is with heavy heart that I rate this place with one star - because I really, really wanted to like it - but I'm afraid that is all I can muster. I would go on to rant/rave about their food, but we (party of 4) didn't even get that far. Waited 45 min for a table on a busy Sunday (not unusual for happening Portland joints) but this was ridiculous...there were only two groups ahead of us, with droves of sated folks exiting. Finally, a booth clears and we're next on the list! Nope...sold to the family of 5 who came in after us. Oh, but there's a 4-seater right there in the middle. Surely, it has our name on it. Nope, that's just going to sit there uninhabited while three other tables remain cluttered with the last party's meal. I work in food service; I understand shit gets crazy and sometimes you're understaffed, etc. But this was unacceptable. The staff had zero hustle and suffered from either a lack of good management or sheer incompetency. Four unbussed tables in such a small space with 4 + waitstaff milling about is not good for business. And if folks are waiting, you best be greeting them and assuring them that a table is on the horizon.

It's a shame, because I've heard good things about this place...

My roommate and I recently stopped in at Sanborn's on a Wednesday, and after our experience, we have trouble understanding why the dining room was almost completely empty. The food was good, seriously good, with some of the best Hollandaise and home fries I have had in my entire life. Her Eggs Florentine were magnificent, and my banana praline Dutch baby was sumptuous. Everything was beautiful, too, straight up food porn. With completely reasonable prices, I'd be surprised if this little gem, tucked away just off of Powell & 12th, didn't become a major feature in PDX's breakfast/brunch circuit. We're telling everyone we know about it. Seriously.
