<![CDATA[If Portland is lacking in one department it's real deal BBQ. Clay's is easily my favorite in Portland but I still don't think of it as the genuine article.
That shack at the 33rd New Seasons is almost unedible, Big Daddy's is awful, Yam Yam's is ok but got that awful health code score, Russel Street is pretty solid, that place on 92nd by the DMV on Powell is HORRIBLE.

Clay's has never let me down. I've had a meal there for $40 that was both myself and my roommate getting sandwiches w/sides, then a sampler plate as well with Cokes. Easily one of the most memorable meals of my life. The trick is the chicken. My lord that chicken just falls off the bone and melts in your mouth.

<![CDATA[Finally tried Clays, 'cuz it's on the "best BBQ" lists. Whoa! If you think this is BBQ, then you have never had real BBQ. Real BBQ is slow-smoked for at least 12 hours over VERY low heat; the collagen fibers in the meat break down into gelatin, and the meat literally falls apart in your mouth with only the slightest tongue pressure. In contrast, my "brisket" at Clay's was basically roast beef with a tiny bit of smokiness, with goopy sauce slathered over it. The meat was neither tender nor juicy. The pork ribs were a bit more tender, but still tasted mostly roasted. I want to be forgiving of the choice of sides, to let it be "chef's choice," but really--boiled potatoes??? That is SO non-'cue. The sauce is tangy but it's so thick that we suspected it was mainly corn syrup (a main ingredient in cheap ketchups). And this place is NOT cheap--with tip, it cost $40 to have two dinner plates and two beers. The folks there are nice; the place is homey. Bottom line: Be warned: Just as it name says: It is a grill, but it is NOT a BBQ restaurant. And don't write me off as an ex-Texan who is insisting upon Portland's adherence to another state's tradition. This is really about quality. Clay's just ain't got it. I'll never go back there.

<![CDATA[Bleah. Brisket was not smoky at all and was smothered in sauce as if to hide their poor smoke job. It had more of the texture of pot roast than brisket. Who are they kidding? Sides were nothing to write home about either.

<![CDATA[Try the brisket platter - amazing meat! The salads and soup are quite tasty as well. Lunch specials usually rock the house. Southern taste with the focus and mix of ingredients found on the west coast.

<![CDATA[I'm not sure how this place is when it's more crowded, but I had a good Sunday brunch there with a vegetarian, and we both were very pleased with the food and the service. The ribs and chicken wings were quite good (massive servings that pretty much require a doggie bag), and my fiancee was quite impressed with the veggie burger.

<![CDATA[Being a vegetarian and all, I was pretty skeptical the first time I went to Clay's. But, holy damn! Not only are there plenty of options for vegetarians, the food is so good, and so well-prepared. My daughter, who has been known to be one of the pickiest eaters on the planet, will request Clay's any time the family is going out to dinner. Be sure to try the veggie sandwich, the corn and barley salad (OMG! YUM!), and the blackened catfish.
