I'd give NO stars if that were possible. I see that Amnesia is endorsed by the Mercury as a staff favorite. I hope they review their decision and investigate the unfortunate actions of the owner directed towards both customers and staff. I used to think this place was great, super laid back, different experience than other breweries, with decent beers. Now, I am disturbed at a recent visit where the owner was visibly drunk, yelling disturbing obscenities about someone he fired. Immature at the least. But who wants to patron a place like this? Grow up!! And while you're at it make a beer that tastes the same batch to batch. The following is a review I found that compelled me to write this in the first place, I can't believe someone else had a more unfortunate experience than I did:

Owner is horrible
I used to come here fairly frequently. I loved their spicy brat with any of their delicious IPAs. No more...

My wife and I were recently sitting at the bar finishing our beers, almost ready to leave. There were about 4 other people there that sunny afternoon. All of a sudden we hear someone around the corner in the back ranting about someone he'd apparently recently fired. Example phrases were "I'm glad I fired the b*tch. She's just a f*cking c*nt." Everybody in the place was shocked, and the waitress/bartender was clearly embarrassed. My wife got up and peered around the corner to tell whoever it was (turned out to be the owner) that everyone in the place could hear him and that he might want to keep it down a little if he was going to use such offensive words. The owner's wrath immediately turned on my wife, as he shouted at her "This is my f*cking place and I can say whatever the f*ck I want to." Then he yelled at her to get out and that she was 86ed from the place. As we got up to leave, after she walked out and I was headed to the door, I heard him call her a "c*nt" and I turned and told him calmly "That's my wife you're talking about, and she does not deserve to be treated like that." His (not unexpected) response was "F*ck you, you're 86ed too. Get out of my bar."

Later, when I saw he was away, I went back in to tip the waitress. She looked horrified at what had happened and apologized. I told her it wasn't her fault and that I was just sorry she had to work for someone like that.

I've never been 86ed before. I'm a nice guy, and I wouldn't be angry if I'd gotten kicked out for being a dick. I used to love this place, but I will never go back, even if we somehow get the apology we deserve. I can't support a person that treats people like that. Besides, there's PLENTY of great beer in Portland. Right up the street there's a new place, Prost! that serves awesome German beer and even better spicy brat sandwiches. Don't waste your time at Amnesia unless you're into abuse and supporting abusers.

i'm sorry, but does anyone who visits amnesia ever look at how they cook their food? i've never seen a dirtier environment in any kitchen. burgers are slapped on the grill (that is, when they are not out of burgers) with bare hands, and buns and sausages are grabbed off immediately, without even a thought of washing their bloody burger hands! tables are bussed, and again, the cooks/bartenders never wash their hands before handling the food.

also, i was there one afternoon and got to witness the brewer yelling at his wife saying he wanted a divorce. hey man, have the decency to do that shit out of site of your paying customers. i've heard other stories about that guy's temper, and if he's brewing the beer, i really don't want to drink it. i used to like the place when it first came on the scene, but there is now no reason to go there for mediocre, inconsistent beer.

(& BTW, the horse brass is super-smoky.) amnesia is a nice blend of working class and young professionals, in my opinion. old and young, and not too many hipsters, thank god. happy hours are good, the food is inexpensive, and the place is simply laid-back. this should be obvious from the outside.

in a town known for microbrew, you'd think it'd be a no-brainer to come up with a good business model, craft some good brew recipes and watch the accolades come in (and loyal patrons). judging from these reviews amnesia's still struggling after starting as a fresh face on the microbrew scene a not too long ago. strange though because they're always packed in the warm weather months, so they must be doing alright for themselves. folks looking for casual anonymity will find it here, they'll get ok food, sometimes great beer, sometimes not, at a place that doesn't claim to have the best of this or that. so maybe they're not aspiring to it. the guys at the homebrew club love it because it's not as polished and yuppy as some of the other places in town where the beer is always, always, consistent. i lost interested when their beer offerings, well, weren't consistent. i've been told that they had some initial kinks to get around so maybe that's changed. more power to a local neighborhood business but there's no reason to go when there are loads of places in town with tasty (and consisently the same taste) offerings with friendly staff to bat. i'll order the ipa when i'm out at a restaurant but i don't have a reason to go to amnesia anymore as there's just no reason to with so many good alternatives.

Those defending this place because it has the best beer in town, state, or northwest are obviously not having good beer experience elsewhere.
Amnesia CAN make good beer, when they get off their lazy asses or stop going on vacatons and MAKE SOME GOOD, QUALITY BEER! Its spotty at best, and you know it. I will gladly take my ass down to The Horsebrass to spend my money, they actually like customers there. I dont care if the service is slow, I care that the service is most often a snide little prick who tries to make you feel stupid for standing at the bar to order a brew! Fuck that guy. He is an extremely self absorbed child who has no idea what real work is. He would rather set the mood with Johnny Cash because he thinks that makes him super cool. God forbid you'd have your coolness tarnished by someone not on the list of people approved by whatever pretentious prick you're worshipping this season.

Oh, and $8 for a very mediocre burger and tooth-breaking potato/grease slabs (aka "chips") is ridiculous.

But seriously, The pretty boy @ amnesia HAS to go. He's far too involved in his love of self to really be in customer service. And I'm sick of his dreary bullshit music. "Wow! Johnny Cash again!" I love Johnny Cash, but people use his music as a hip badge. I know you think you seem cool, man, but you really are just enoforcing your buzzkill on everyone. Then we leave. But at least you get to close early, right? Afterall, that's all you wanted.
Damn those pesky customers anyway!

Well, the last time I was there I was pretty annoyed by the twit running the counter. Like another reviewer mentioned, the guy made me feel stupid for ordering something other than beer but what was worse is that he was trying to hit on me while ignoring that I was obviously there with someone. The people behind us in line were feeling my pain and still the nitwit kept it up. The dude was younger than my younger brother. Gag! So not cool. Of course, I'm laughing as I write this. It was just absurd. ANYWAY! The grilled food is good, the beer alright and seating can be tough especially when it's nice outside. Amnesia Brewing is worth an occasional visit, but don't plan a special outing or anything.

I used to go here when it was just getting it's legs. I liked the beer and the brewing quickly grew superior to many other brewpubs in town. Then mississippi REALLY blew up and i couldnt even get a fucking seat here because all the 23rd-esque assholes. The sad bane of portland nightlife. A group of local people make a good scene somewhere, morons come to see it and keep coming.
Then, the worst part, they hired this guy who obviously doesnt know how to work. He acts like a prissy little bitch when you ask him for food, but his hair and clothes are perfect! He will try to make you feel stupid for asking for anything other than beer, regardless of what is CLEARLY ON THE MENU! If he would quit i would surely come back more often, but i refuse to NOT tip and that little twit isnt getting a dime from me. For what it's worth, i love the other employees, but the little narcissist seems to ALWAYS be there.

Furthermore, if the owner would get off his lazy hippy ass and do some actual BREWING i could overlook the above mentioned full-of-himself bar boy and yuppie clientele.

The title might be a stretch, but it is pretty damn close to being the Best Beer in Portland. They have a nice selection of beers, don't ask what the difference between the two IPAs is, just try them. Their burgers are also quite good. The key is its simplicity, the patty is seasoned very well. The icing on the cake: good people watching.

This place is great; the atmosphere is affable, the beer good, if not a little on the uber-hoppy side, and the servers are all really nice. It is one of my neighborhood haunts and I am glad I have it accessible for that sunny Saturday afternoon or rainy monday night. I like its simplicity, with only simple barbecue fare available, and that they don't mind if you order a pizza from up the street if you're sick of hot dogs.
