may14th...to see cold.
I am so excited for these guys. I really hope that they make some money. I am pretty sure that past record label woes stemming from multiple labels and their new contract with 11- seven music has got to be kinda screwed up. I have checked up on some of their recent youtube items, and there is so much bass that its ridiculous. I love cold. i have identity crisis like the next cat and when korn and limpbiskit got together with staind not long ago, I felt like THEY were left out. I hate that. Anyways, I wanna go. I skipped a few of their shows, but not like in the Blue October kind of way, more like, I am too big of a fan to want to be seen as a common nerd in the crowd amongst hardcore fans.sorry for that. Its hard to say that sticking around for this concert will be a blessing, and after skipping artwork over two years now, I effing love the way COld is displayed on the different kind of pain case, I feel bad and obligated to get one...a tattoo, you know. Anyways, just trying to avoid some music for the time being and do something fun.

As far as Numbers being a concept album, it is. That's one of the most intriguing parts of the album: the concept is a full week of different experiences and feelings starting with Newstories on Friday and spanning the week with Love I'm After representing most of the week and ending with the song Numbers as a goodbye. That's the concept. - Heather

Disappointing happy hour. If you go, be ready to pay for the regular menu. They recently changed their happy hour burger: it was a great deal, now you'll be paying WAY too much for a little slider. Happy hour oysters were undercooked and kind of gross. One caveat: the servers were great, so maybe if you go outside of happy hour you'll have a good experience.

Drew Grow and The Pastors' Wives is one of the more inventive bands based in Portland, if you haven't seen them live yet, you should be asking yourself why? And maybe flailing yourself with a whip. The only way to describe them (and this is totally inadequate compared to seeing them live or hearing them) is to picture Tom Waits, Mark Lanegan and a couple of choir folk spending all day drinkin' whiskey and then commence to make music. Yes, it's that good. Drew Grow maybe fronting the band, but the Pastors' Wives add that much needed punch with amazing backing vocals, inventive stand-up bass and astonishing drumming. So stop flailing yourself and get out there and see them for yourself.

I just moved here from a small city in Tennessee. This was the first place I went to sample the dim fertile waters in a much bigger scene. I wore all black just to be safe. Black is always the safest color in Portland, I've since discovered. After walking through a termite's intestine decorated by gay loggers, I found the downstairs music venue. It was one of those "indeterminate" type indie bands with some guy on bass playing the brown noise a lot, a guy in a stocking cap on keyboards, and a shrill, ironically nerdy vocalist. This one had a lady who swore into the mic at intervals and played tambourine. Weaving through the people in front of the stage (not a wild bunch) was like getting trapped in a rabbi's walk-in closet. It was musty; lots of black cloth. And damn near all of them wore chunky black spectacles. C'mon. I got ostracized for my entire childhood because of my poor vision and NOW it's so cool to be a nerdy intellectual?!! Oy, vey! God damn all the unearned intellectualism in this burg!

The following AMADAN alumni will be joining us at the show:
Jeremy Bauer - Whistle, Percussion
Naoyuki Ochiai - Fiddle
John Coleman - Bass
Mikey Morrow - Drums

Ten years ago, Eric Tonsfeldt, Mikey Morrow, and Rupert Hugh-Jones played their first show as the Celtic-inspired pub band Amadan in Corvallis, Oregon. As quickly adding members as developing a rabid regional following, they spent their first six years filling a heavy ~100-gig-per-year schedule with music and cultural festival appearances, college campus events, and the obvious staple: three- to four-hour, high-energy house gigs in pubs and clubs throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. This blue-collar approach to music gave the growing Amadan lineup the energy and chops to churn out a number of developed original songs, segueing them into rock clubs.

Derivative of world music and an array of hard hitting and orchestrated rock and punk influences, the band has plotted their creative course with three releases, beginning with a half-Irish acoustic effort in 2002 and continuing through 2007's "Pacifica," a fast-paced, intricate, multi-instrumental record with eleven original tracks and one traditional tune. At the same time post-punk, post-celtic, post-barroom and post-comprehensible, the constantly maturing five-piece act has evolved into one of the mainstays of the Northwest rock and roll scene, and continues to write and develop new music. November 20th will see Amadan celebrate their 10th anniversary at the Doug Fir Lounge. The act seeks to celebrate their colorful history with returning band alumni, recharged old songs, and old fans and friends. Sarsaparilla and The Beautiful Train Wrecks will open the night.
