I haven't seen the Chop Tops from Santa Cruz in hella years. Last night, when the singer named Sinner who is also a hitter on stand up drums, added extra percussion to the beat by calling out Oi, Oi, Oi in the midst of one song, the impulse reaction came flooding back to me from the shows in SF and Oakland when my shyness to dance at shows would disappear. It's me and my tastes that have made me accustomed to audiences who stand around back from the stage, barely shifting their weight from foot to foot. I love the Chop Tops sets, a man grabs a girl and they swing. Shelby trades mad grins with revved up rockers. jumping way higher than is wise whilst playing six string and goading the audience to higher levels of energy. From start to end, whether I wanted to or not, I was part of the full on abandon to the flame which the Chop Tops incite.

This place could be a great venue. I am not sure if this something they do all the time, but they played on a large screen, 70's hillbilly porn for about an hour before the bands started for the show on Sat Oct 4th.
The did not turn it off when the first band started until someone went and told them to turn it off.
It was amusing for about 10 minutes, then became very annoying and made most uncomfortable.
So bands, if you want to have the audience uncomfortable and not remember you, but the hillbilly porn, then go ahead and book a show there.
But I for one, will never be a patron on this place again.
