It'd be nice if writers would hitch their band wagon to critics with an ear for talent. The Shook Twins were amazing. Lost Lander could not recreate their well produced sound into a live atmosphere. LL's tunes resulted in a muffled, crowded, and all-too-familiar indie rock sound that cared way too much about their stage presence. The Shook Twins were a complete band that was only trying to be themselves and did so with grace and dignity.

Traditionally poor sound quality. Every single show that I have been to over the years has had terrible mix. I hope that they invest some money on resolving these issues so that they don't become the punchline of the joke "oh no, it's at the Wonder Ballroom." The building itself is nice, unfortunately the sound quality makes great bands unlistenable.

This is not a sleepy musical. I definitely recommend the Splatter area since you are closer to the stage. Even better my wife and I had a hot bloody demon die right in our laps!! I had seen EDtM in Seattle in 2010 and it was fantastic so I was really looking forward to the Portland production last summer. I was sorely disappointed. The first problem was that none of the actors could sing. Oh, one or two of them were passable, but the rest couldn't carry a tune. The song "Good Old Reliable Jake" would have been funny if the joke was that Jake couldn't hit a single note, but it wasn't played that way.

The splatter zone was a joke. Rather than being sprayed by blood from the stage or from the actors, there were a couple of assistants wandering the splatter zone with plant misters. Why bother?

Inexplicably, this production used canned music. Why would you do that in Portland? You can find talented musicians everywhere you look in this city.

All in all it was a waste of $25 and I would recommend that everybody avoid the Portland production if it's being put on by the same troop.

As many people have said, the sound is broken here. It's glittery and EQ'ed flat but all smeared up & limited, with no detail and no transient dynamics. There's too many speakers and not enough acoustic treatment. For a band like The Hold Steady, where the lyrics would be pretty awesome if the vocals were legible, it's definitely the wrong venue.

If you do find yourself here and needing to hear the band, head up to the back balcony where there are a row of JBL Eon monitors playing the PA mix. They sound way better than the crap by the stage.

It's also a drag to get hit with a $2 "delivery fee" when you walk to the damn venue yourself and pay cash at the box office. If there's no escaping this bullshit tax, why isn't it advertised? Bait & switch is a pretty sleazy business practice.

I've heard Lanegan several times in Seattle (at the Showbox) and this was my first time at Wonder. What a disappointment. At Showbox, the sound is crisp and clear - you hear every nuance from the vocalist. But at Wonder, the amazing Lanegan was completely buried under the instruments. Everything sounds fine at Wonder when the vocalists perform acoustically, but as soon as the rest of the band kicks in it sounds like they're singing through mud. I would have been better off sitting at home playing my own CDs. So disappointing. Don't think I will be visiting again; it's almost worth it to drive up to Seattle to hear sound done right. Oh well.

I must see Metric live to find out if Emily Haines has what it takes to dethrone Helen Marnie and Mira Aroyo of Ladytron as hottest female dance vocalists in my book.

From what I have heard about Emily, I think she could successfully take them both on.
Please make it possible for me to conduct this scientific research. It is my life’s work.
I've seen the Black Angels once and Roky a few times. This was a pretty mediocre night for both bands. The Black Angels were about as inventive as any other throw-back act, not what I was anticipating at all. Roky must have had an off night. Eh, still better than most of the shows you'll see on an average Wednesday.

Not very impressed. I went recently and ordered their Mac & Cheese ($9). It was just pene with a runny cheese sauce and some super-hard bread crumbs sprinkled on top. What a rip-off! For nine bones and as long as it took, they could have at least sprinkled some real cheese on top and thrown it under the broiler for five minutes. I ate it because I was starving but I wouldn't recommend it. Maybe I'll give them another chance in the future. I like the space and the service was fine.
