The Gravlax Bord with pickled beet salad, horseradish creme and lightly toasted brown bread is one of the most delicious lunches I have ever had in my life. The open kitchen, cute staff and Scandinavian knick-knacks give your eyes a feast while you're waiting for your food. They also serve liquor, including a couple kinds of Akvavit, and Stumptown coffee. I love Broder Cafe.

There is not much Scandinavian about this place other than the menu and place settings from Ikea.

We had breakfast. It was on the low end of average, and portions were small with more emphasis on cute than good... very heavy on the butter and cream.

The service was really poor. We arrived at 9:30 with 4 people ahead of us in line, and did not get served until 11:15. It was not worth the wait. The blairing techno music nearly drove us nuts, and the persnickety waiter was nearly as irritating. We felt more like we were dining in a gay techno club than a scandinavian cafe.

I do not recommend this restaurant.

If you only order a few items, of course your going to leave hungry. If you want to make a meal out of it you have to order the smorgasbord. My friend and I did and shared everything and we got ten dishes for less than $60. There was so much food we where not able to eat it all, and everything was incredible. The biggest suprise was the asparagas with hollidaise sauce, so simple but so delicious! The crab salad and the deviled eggs where also stand-outs. The dishes are super cheap alone because they're small and your supposed to get several of them, so you can try many different flavors. In addition, the staff was very friendly, helpful, patient and cute. My only critique, the seating against the window is not very comfortable. The bench needs a back. Other than that everything was amazing and I will be back, it's definetely worth it.

"Francine" may be on to something, in that it takes more folks ordering more things to really get a variety of flavors at Broder.

However, I agree with "Wanted To Like It" in that Ry Krisp crackers (which you can get in any grocery store) seem to be treated like side dishes here, and are served far too often.

Me and my date had just cleaned up from a long bike ride and were ravenous by dinner time. We split a smorgasbord and a couple of entrees, and the crackers took up a lot of space on every plate, making the servings of the good stuff from the kitchen pretty small. As someone who dines out a lot, I think this comes across as being a little cheap.

In response to the above comment about the portions being small: I didn't find them ridiculously small, but I would suggest going with 3-4 people and ordering a few smorgasboards so as to sample several things, and I bet you'll find yourself sated.

Anyone with a taste for Scandinavian should love this place. The prices are reasonable. The food is exceptional. And the portions should leave any normal human being feeling satisfied. If you find it tough "actually making dinner out of what you get", try going to McDonald's. I hear they have a great supersize menu.

Awesome? Well, the food is nicely laid out on the plates, but the possibility of actually making dinner out of what you get is tough. The portions are puny, so don't go hungry or you'll leave hungry.

And, you'd better like RyKrisp crackers a lot, because they are mighty popular ingredients here.

The good? The place is cute, the beer and wine selections are interesting, and the staff is friendly. Too bad there's a cheapskate in the kitchen.
