ParkerS Cafe is in the process of hiring new staff. I recently interviewed with Chris, Parker's son, the manager. Chris never once looked me in the eyes during the course of our hour long interview. Nor did he ask me any questions about myself, my qualifications, my resume, or what I thought I had to offer to the cafe. Instead, he repeatedly rubbed his eyes and forehead, and mumbled his explanation of their operating procedures and policies. He spoke to me in a manner I had a hard time interpreting, whether it was condescending or passive-aggressive, from disparaging the last item on my resume (film work, not cafe work) without allowing me an opprotunity to speak to the benefits and skills I acquired through that employment; to explaining that ParkerS wasn't "up on Hawthorne or Belmont, we don't care about how many tattoos you have," (I don't have tattoos, in fact, am very clean cut, and "some cafes will only make the perfect latte, but we just cater to the office building, we really just care about moving people through the line..."

The 5 star review of this place references "businesses without imagination who fall back on Stumptown," which neglects both the international (via direct trade) local (Portland-based) and personal (who has bigger rushes? Yet Stumptown would never advocate serving inferior coffee) philosophy of respect and appreciation that Stumptown preaches.

This town has the highest concentration of well-educated, unemployed people under 30 in the nation. In this job market, when hopeful job applicants are fighting tooth and nail for every new position that opens, is it too much to ask that businesses show the same dedication and respect? The same level of sincere commitment?

I found the management at ParkerS to be apathetic and rude, and the latte I had was bitter. I would encourage patrons to support businesses that respect you more, and hope job applicants to look elsewhere.

In the interest of full disclosure, I was offered a second interview that would take the form of a 4.5 hr unpaid "trial/exploratory/volunteer" shift. I turned it down.

This is a weird but good little place. I got a double 8 oz. latte that was pretty good, the foam was creamy, not bubbly and the espresso tasted fine. I ordered a panini, it took quite awhile for it to arrive at my table but it was tasty. It was the Italian something or other; mozzarella, tomato, basil, and red pepper. The decor is kind of cheesy but it is comfortable and not too sterile or too cool.
Not a destination but good if you are nearby.
