At first, Thong Thai seems a typical suburban restaurant. The premises are unremarkable. We were there by accident after fruitlessly searching for a Filipino restaurant that had closed.

When the appetizer plate of Coconut Prawns (#6) arrived, I suspected we would have a good dining experience. Really, I had no idea just how good! The prawns were perfect -- big, piping hot and crisp. Served with grated cabbage and a delightful sweet and sour sauce, they were good enough to leave me pondering a meal consisting of just five to seven plates full of prawns. Decadent idea! I'm glad I didn't give in to that temptation, though.

I ordered Hor Mok Talay (#58) mixed seafood with a light red curry sauce, $13.95. What a deal! I've got to comment on the presentation. My wife, Julie, said it was too pretty to eat. Believe me, I ate it all. I ordered more rice so none of the curry sauce would go to waste. The seafood was fabulous. Scallops dominated. There were three big green mussels on a half shell, many, many juicy prawns, tender salmon, and some squid, just so you would have something to really chew on. I slowed way down so I could savor every bite. Our conversation revolved around how good the food was.

Julie had the Cashew Nut stir fry with Chicken (#43). I told her, "You have to try a scallop." She said, "No, I want to keep this taste in my mouth." She said it was great. She loved the nuts, the thin-sliced carrots and the water chestnuts, but she figures that it was mostly the sauce that had her hooked.

I think the chef may be an undiscovered genius. Her high standards and artistry are strikingly plain. The wait staff is headed by her husband, a friendly, charming man. Service was good. We walked in on a Friday night without a reservation and were seated immediately, probably due to the recession and the lateness of the hour, as this place really deserves to be packed.

There are more phenomenal Thai places than you can shake a stick at here in Portland, but this one is where I go when I want awesome food and I want it now and I don't want to pay an arm and a leg. You're taught to avoid the burbs for a transcendent culinary experience-- my sweetheart and I usually travel to the more posh North side or the more hip SE side, but dude, even though this place is in the burbs it still kicks ass (best pumpkin curry I've ever had, and it's 10 bucks. Can't beat it). I wish sometimes they had chili sauce on the table, 'cause some dishes lack a certain amount of heat, but sometimes it's not an issue. Always the ingredients are ridiculously fresh, perfectly prepared and served with a smile.
