Queral says its only a matter of time before Portland approves fluoridation? That its not a lost cause? Bwahahahahaaa! Are you kidding me? This is the FOURTH time Portlanders have voted this down. And now by 20% when being outspent 3 to 1? I like this sentiment: Lets not be the last major city to fluoridate, lets be the first major city to figure out dental access for all kids. Lets start coming together over the issue of dental care for kids, and how about leave the fluoride fight out of the picture for at least another 10 to 20 years... Remember, as long as "Keep Portland Weird" is a major theme, fluoridated water has no chance. Want fluoride? Get box stores, kick all artists out of town, make this place just like Phoenix or Tampa.

Well, I guess this means we won't have to spank the fluoride lovin' minority again for another 20 years or so. When you lose by 20% (or more) you just have to give it a rest for a decade or two. That's about as much of a beat down as you can get at the polls, especially when you outspend the other side 3 to 1.

Anon, I'm sorry that you & your girlfriend lost her sweet cat. And you were good to take care of the body and bury it.

Not all Portland drivers can stop driving -- but come on, we all can be on the lookout for small creatures. Even if you don't agree that cats should be outside, it's not the cat's fault that the owner made that decision. Plus, there are kids and other creatures who might dart into the roads. Cars often speed like maniacs down our 25 MPH side street. What the hell is their problem?

My cats used to be indoor/outdoor, until one was hit by a car a few months ago. He lived but is permanently injured (oh, and you don't want to know the cost of a few nights in the kitty ICU at DoveLewis -- they're great, but ouch). Now he and his sibling are staying indoors -- both for themselves and the local birds. The cats aren't happy about their new status yet. Another friend who made the transition said it took several months before her cats stopped trying to run outside whenever the door was open for a few seconds. It's hard, since I know my cats loved exploring, but the pain my cat-boy went through in his recovery was even more heartbreaking.

I hope you & your girlfriend can find happiness with a new cat, when you're ready.

Yo, screennametaken - the science is out there pal. Clearly you must not have looked too damn hard at all. Or looked only at what you wanted to.
Early polling suggests fluoridation is going down hard. Too bad, it is one of the few tax increases I ever voted for, even though it will be of no benefit to me whatsoever. And it goes along way with my thinking of health care as a basic right.
This to me represents the fact that the politics of fear still work, especially here in supposedly 'progressive' Portland. Fear, and Fear of Change.
You and Jenny McCarthy can enjoy your victory.

That is a good question. I have always assumed it's because those authors draw the biggest crowds, and the Beaverton store can fit more people comfortably... but it's not like there were THAT many people at the Jo Walton reading. I will find someone to ask.
