I've admired a lot of your work over the years, which makes the glaringly limited perpective displayed in this piece all the more disappointing. If you had attended the entirety of the April 11th budget hearing in particular (which from your interpretation I assume you didn't) you would have seen anything but "peace." From the hundreds of Portlanders who showed up at hearing after hearing, to the passionate testimony we have heard on behalf of the safety net and the many other vital programs on the chopping block this year, to the pleas of union city workers to not be laid-off when there is already more work to be done than there are workers to do it, the actual process has borne little resemblance to the story you have concocted.

Anti-austerity activists such as myself and my friend above have been giving up our free time to fight back against Mayor Hales's baseless assertion that cuts are our only way forward. We have been there from beginning to end at budget hearing after budget hearing, and we're not even being paid to do so, so what's your excuse? If you had stuck around on April 11th, you would have heard Robin Hahnel, Professor of economics at PSU, deliver an impassioned and expert speech on the folly of austerity, from Portland to DC. You would have heard the City Council attempt to cut him off only to be vocally overruled by the community members in attendance. You would have seen the majority of the room stand up in opposition to cuts and for progressive revenue when asked to do so. You would have heard the crowd crying out for City Council to "go get the money" from the wealthy and rich corporations.

That doesn't sound so peaceful to me. I think you need a more diverse range of sources.

Nope, came here for (gasp) a job. I would request you not make assumptions without knowing, or demonstrating a good grasp of, the facts-- but that motherfuckin ship has sailed. Also, what do you have against people who move somewhere for a better life? So the fuck what? Are you "original"? You're a tool who attacks character without knowing anything. As much as the corporate lobbyists for fluoridation would have you believe the opposite, and have no facts to support their sales pitch, Portland is following the global anti-fluoridation trend -- and is leading the way for America, as we do on most political issues.

Even after massive outspending by the pro-fluoride marketing manipulators, only a minority of Portlandites were fooled. This is why Portland is so excellent, informed, and intelligent compared to most of America.

And if you don't like it, maybe you should consider the possibility that a) you've been duped by pseudoscientific marketing hacks, and b) maybe this isn't the town for you, and you should leave.

Now we just have to convince the remaining 5% minority of "kooks" and "fearmongers" and "conspiracy theorists" (in the polite words of The Mercury's frantically pro-fluoride reporting) to follow the saner 95% (including Europe, Japan, Portland, and 1/3 of the US) in rejecting toxic fluoride.

Portland officially kicks ass. And if you think we're stupid, that's just because you're a pseudoscientific hack with no critical thinking skills, and should move elsewhere.

And take your asinine pro-fluoride propaganda with you.

Look, much to my dismay, I had a certain important death and perpetrator in Harry Potter spoiled for me. And I'm still very much a Harry Potter fan and very much enjoyed the book. But I was robbed of that "Is this really going to happen?!" moment, you know, that moment where you get chills and put the book down just to savor the moment and let the anticipation build. And I guess that's what it boils down to. Anticipation, why would we rob ourselves of this very important aspect of storytelling? Would Christmas morning be half as exciting if all the presents were wrapped in cellophane?

And as a filmmaker myself, I feel it's almost disrespectful to the creative team behind a movie who have spent (hopefully) a considerable amount of time fine tuning the reveals of their movie, to just not care and actively seek out spoilers.

I mean, if the "what" is so unimportant that it doesn't matter if we know the outcome of a story before watching/reading/hearing it, why do we even both coming up with new stories? Let's just keep pumping out remakes.
