The Portland Mercury either totally dropped the ball looking at the truth of the matter, or the despite all the edgy, artsy, "alternative" dressing is just as corporate sell-out snake of a paper. At least with the Oregonian you know what you're getting.

It's really too bad all of the name calling of people unwilling to have a rational respectful dialogue. All your hateful ignorant name calling means nothing.
If you really had a good case for fluoridation you wouldn't need to mock and demonize with no basis.

A landslide number of Portland voters get it. I hope the rest of Portland gets it eventually soon enough. There are much better ways to deal with dental health than dumping the toxic by-product of the fertilizer industry into the Bull Run water.

Let's not forget that the arts tax pays for stuff that isn't arts-in-schools-- like a $100k for an RACC executive's salary, various art projects that don't necessarily keep the money in Oregon, and handouts for the opera and symphony. Is this the bill you voted for? I bet you didn't even read it.
The benefit to schools was an afterthought. Stop using "the children" as ransom.

Personally, I'd wager that we've imported enough tech talent in the past two years to temporarily eclipse the number of unskilled future baristas streaming into our town every day.
That, or the "Portlandia" show has made Portland uncool with the youngsters and the influx has cooled.
I guess I'm one of those folks whom @human in training speaks of. Except he can't figure out if the people who are against fluoride are 'hippie airheads' or actual practical people who can't just be grouped into random subsets of Different Kinds Of People.

And @Horny Hippo, I'm not sure what you're talking about, but I was reminded of when a bunch of Democrats posed as Green Party members and thwarted Ralph Nader's chances getting on the Oregon ballot. I'm not a Green Party member any more, but it cuts both (all?) ways.

I grew up on well water. I just went to the dentist after 6 years and I have zero cavities. Because I, like, brush my teeth and floss, and stuff (with fluoride toothpaste, btw). And it's something that everyone can do. Because it's affordable and doable. Just brush and floss. Cavities are not caused because of a lack of fluoride. And I do realize our water isn't "pure" b/c it has other chemicals in it. I just don't want to add another chemical to it. What's so fucking wrong with that?

Man, when I moved to PDX 10.5 years ago, my first apartment was at SW 11th & Alder. (Beverly Alder FTW! Studio apt. w/ my boyfriend & a Murphy bed and kitchenette. Walk in closet, bathroom and fire escape, however, were nice. But I digress.)

At the time, there were hardly any businesses there. My block was so empty there was garbage everywhere on the street. Walking thru that hood and seeing the changes makes me sentimental but it's nice too see all of the awesome places there are to check out now.

Peace has reigned? Did you go to the budget hearings? The ones on April 11 and May 16 were standing room only, with people waiting for hours just to sign up to speak. The budget process was very contentious this year and as the realities play out, the controversies will continue. Some examples:
Around 170 City jobs are still being cut, the compromises saved only a few. More than half are union positions. While some were vacancies, many are not. Even cutting vacant positions is a down-sizing of city services, as our population continues to grow. City workers testified about huge backlogs of work orders. Not maintaining our city parks and infrastructure is bad fiscal and civic policy. He should be hiring MORE people to maintain our city, not cutting their jobs.
Hales did NOT spare the safety net. Housing will suffer deep cuts because the Federal sequester means $1.2 million less to Portland Housing Bureau. The city funded housing at the same level as last year. They should have increased the City funding, knowing that the Feds are severely reducing theirs. This is far from preserving the safety net and Hales and Council know that. Yet they continue to congratulate themselves for "fully funding" housing.
As for other programs, while the services for sex trafficking victims was not totally eliminated, nor was it totally restored. Several positions will still be eliminated there. Some programs like VOZ and East Portland Action Plan were moved to one time only funds, in effect given notice that they will be cut in a year.
Hales is proving to be a spinmaster. His tactic of asking for 10% cuts and then "restoring" it back to a 6% cut level was disorienting. What he never talked about was getting revenue from those who can afford it the most--big corporations and very wealthy individuals.

Here's a secret: anecdote is not the same as evidence, kiddo. And you can't use one example (ok ok, two examples-- including YOUR PARTNER..WTF??) to prove anything about a large-scale public health issue.

"fuck right off"??
whatever dude, you're a perfect example of a turd that ruins this place. Take your own advice.
