I bet 100/1 hardly anyone from the Merc or other papers or the pro side bothered to take time to see where & who fluoridation chemicals came from. How about Mosaic. A company whose CEO just received a 22% bonus & supports GMO's. Or how about Simplot, a supplier for Salem. They're working on GMO potatoes because Monsanto failed to do so. They have been fined in the PNW & Oregon for pollution. And then we have Univar. A corp that proudly gets & distributes toxic chemicals to Dow, DuPont, Syngenta, Bayer, BASF, and so many other big-pharma & big agri-biz corps.

Guess "justice" and "equity" means land and community destroying phosphate mining & lining CEO's pockets so they can grow GMO's and pollute towns & cities at the same time. That's where fluoridation chemicals come from and I'm glad Portland can now get to working on solutions that are based on real advocacy & real solutions, instead of gagging on Simplots toxic scrote.

Cheers to Denis T and the rest of the Mercury staff for taking a position on a controversial issue that most likely alienated a large share of your readership. I'm sorry to see some readers of your rag retreat farther into the ether of extremism and science fiction--if they think the Mercury is mainstream they should try living in Branson, Missouri for a bit--but, you win some you lose some. There are some interesting and very relevant articles out on the web today that shed some light on the peculiar and tragic outcome of the great fluoride debate of 2013. "Why Rational People buy into Conspiracy Theories," in yesterday's New York Times has some salient observations applicable to the anti-fluoride camp and even the gloating going on in the wake of the election. NPR (another "mainstream" news outlet) has a piece today on the fallout of the anti-vaccine movement in the UK--in short a measles epidemic. I have lived in Portland for 3 years and will continue to read the Mercury, the Oregonian, the Williamette Weekly, NYT, WSJ, Mother Jones and whatever Noam Chomsky's currently peddling because dismissing reputable journalism because you disagree with an OpEd is a fast track to ignorance. Again, thanks for your stand and keep up the good work.

We were confounded, Katie? Or did we actually suggest maybe some opponents and skeptics were confounded? Maybe you didn't read our endorsement so closely or don't understand a deployment of the royal "we"? Take a look at the verbatim quotation:

"The simple and reasonable case for fluoridation—which the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) definitively urges for the prevention of tooth decay in children and adults—is drowning under a hailstorm of counter-arguments that look, sound, and seem rational. Except that they aren't.

And it's understandable. We're scared of junk science that we're too busy to tear apart. And we're worried about one of the things that Portlanders hold at the center of our civic identity: our water. So we rage about lobbyists and we put up signs that tell people not to do something that practically every other major city in America has done, some for decades and none with any sign of catastrophe.

Never mind that many of you who might be leaning toward "no" won't be the ones who suffer..."

Have fun jumping on newspapers and complaining about how people who don't agree with you—and list precisely and transparently why not—are rotten!

I've lived here for more than three years and can say, without a shadow of doubt, that my life was way better when I drank fluoride. I'm devastated by knowing that we're going to have to wait for fluoride. I miss it. I used to love pouring it all over my naked body. Mixing up some cool-aid-fluoride on a hot day. Filling my swimming pool with muddled fluoride water. It was dope. Now life doesn't really mean anything. I mean, what does it MEAN? Nothing. We're never gonna get fluoride and everyone gonna die, soon.

Yeah, I've never heard of it either.
Let the City hand out tax payer funded fluoride pills if you like Communism so damned much.
